Ok so I'm am due my scopes tomorrow, I have had my light diet yesterday, and today I am only allowed clear fluids and jelly.

When they say clear fluids does that mean I can still drink lemonade? Purely because I have a cold too and feeling so lethargic?

I start the picolax in t minus 3 hours.

I am really worried about tomorrow too as I have never been into hospital for anything major and I have never been put under. I'm petrified and I'm not sure why.

Probably sounds so stupid doesn't it.

Hi - the prep is the worst part of the prep! At the hospital they willngive you good drugs so you shouldn't remember the scope.

As for lemonade - as long as you can see through it then it is fine - remember no pulp!

Try not to worry, the worst bit is the Picolax! When they give you the sedative, it is odd but it doesn't feel like you are going off to sleep really but afterwards you can't remember anything. It's not a scary feeling and they will talk you through everything.

With regards to the prep, I drank lots of lemonade and water. If you want something hot you can have clear soup (consommee?)

Thanks so much. Ive been told I'll be fully put out as they are doing a camera down my throat too. I am due to take the picolax in half hour now.

Thank god I can drink lemonade. I can eat clear sweets too can't I? Like clear mints? It's crazy I've never been hungry before but being told I can't eat it's all I can think about doing.

Does the scopes hurt afterwards at all? Thanks for all the advice it really does help.

My 10 yr old just had the scopes done. She came out just fine and in no pain at all. She had a little bit of discomfort because she felt a bit gassy afterwards. But nothing unbearable.
Good luck!

Oh thank god, thank you for telling me that really does help to put my mind at rest.
I swear it's the waiting that's making it worse.

I haven't eaten in what feels like a week as when I could eat the other day it went right through me :(
Thank you for your help :) I go in at 3.30 pm tomorroe so just a bit more waiting for now.

I have never felt anything afterwards other than a bit of wind! I guess with the camera down your throat you may be a little sore afterwards.

It's not that bad, just be prepared for the prep. I learned after going through every pair of underwear I had for the first one. I took my laptop and a good book and didn't leave the toilet for several hours on the second one. Worked out much better that time! :)

Sedation during colonoscopy

Hello,

I had my first colonoscopy yesterday and one thing was not as I expected! I knew the sedation would keep me concious but thought it would take my mind off what was going on. However I felt completely awake and 'un-sedated' the whole time, feeling every twist and turn. That said it was quite bearable and we were able to joke about it during the examination. I felt really drowsy on the train home a few hours later though. That said I found the whole experience far easier than I had expected.

Hi Robert

im sorry to hear that you were awake for it all, it must have been peculiar? i woke up during part of mine and it really hurt me ( have had a bit of bleeding too) i agree with you the whole experience was alot better than i thought. it was only the prep which i couldnt handle too well.

did you get any diagnosis from your scopes?

Thanks Kat

I guess the sedation must had some 'numbing' effect - hmmmm. The positive is that I was able to tell the doctor every time there was pain and this was my original concern if I had been completely sedated.

Results next week - but now I have had my first I will certainly have no future fears about the examination. Incidentally I have been on a liquid diet recently - the prep was easy!

Lucky for you, I wish I had been more aware of how much the prep takes it out of you. But I am very glad that you were able to tell them how you were feeling. To an extent I wish I were able too but I am also very glad I was out because I was so nervous I probably never would have been able to go through with it.

I, like you wouldn't fear the examination I found it to be a good experience, to say it was my first real experience with hospitals.

Please keep us posted with your results.

I hope you are well
