Colonoscopy/ Upper Endoscopy

Hello everyone,

I have a quick question. I am in the middle of being diagnosed and the next test I need is a colonoscopy/ upper endoscopy. I am going to my doctor Tuesday to get the ball rolling in getting this done.

The problem is I am all alone in a foreign country, waiting for my husband to get back from a deployment. He might still be gone when I need to get this done.

My question is...is it safe to get this done without him? The last time I was put under I was sore and out of it from being put under for about two days, and I don't know what I would have done without my husbands help. I am afraid that I should not get this done without knowing there will be someone there to make sure I am ok before, during and after.

What do you guys think? Should I wait until he gets back? I really want to wait until he gets back. But I know I need to get this done soon, because I am getting more ill as time goes by.

You'll certainly need an adult with you (whether its your husband or someone else) as you'll be sedated for these tests.

If you're not well I would get tested soon as you can,

ok..I completely agree..

no one here to be with me atm So I guess I will express this to the commander at the hospital and see if they can get him back as early as possible...

Let me say this though: I will not be driving to or from the test, I will either take a cab or the bus. I definitely know that I can't drive..its the being at home part alone that I am worried about.

I'm in the UK and they won't perform these tests unless someone is with you, I presume it'll be the same where you are.

Certainly forget maybe taking the bus.

Depending on how much sedation you are given, as you might be "out of it" for a time, you really ought to have someone with you after you get home too.

Like I said, I will have to see at my appointment if the commander at the clinic will help me get him here faster...I am getting too sick to be by myself :frown:, and I have had every other test with no luck to getting a diagnosis...

I am really not liking the army right now.

I am sorry to here you are alone during all of this.

Where I get my test done they are fine with me taking a cab home. Ask your doctor or at your base, maybe they something arranged just for situations like this. I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

When I had my colonoscopy & endoscopy, I was specifically told that I'd need a responsible adult to be with me, even if I was taking the bus or a taxi home (and they specified that the bus driver/taxi driver would not count).

I had the two tests done at different times, and although I felt okay and pretty alert after waking up from the colonoscopy, the endoscopy was different and I barely even remember leaving the hospital. Apparently I had seemingly coherent conversations with my doctor and my husband, but I don't remember any of it. I do remember bits and pieces, like having difficulty getting dressed, and being wheeled through the hospital in a wheelchair because I was too out of it to walk. I was really glad my husband was there not only to drive me, but to look after me as I was really loopy from the drugs they gave me.

So long story short, you definitely do want to have a responsible, trusted adult with you, even if you do take a cab or the bus home. You don't know how much the knockout drugs will affect you, your memory, your ability to walk, and especially your ability to make decisions.

Yeah, at this point I realize I am going to have to wait...I emailed my husband about it and this is the response I got:

"You still need to go to the doc. they should be able to help in some way. if you do need me they will contact my commander. If he finally gets I am not a coward I should get to go home. please push as far as you can go with the medical, you need to get healthy. if you need to stay in hospital for the test please do it, I hope I will get back to help you but you have got to get healthy"

so I guess after this appointment tomorrow I will probably be back to playing the waiting game! Hoping the commander will see the urgency and bring him home like he was suppose to.
