I had my Humira pen injection yesterday at my local doctor's, the nurse wasted one because she forgot to take the grey lid off the needle end, soooo we had to get another one out of the fridge... I told her that it needed to be kept out of the fridge for at least 15 minutes, but she kept it out for less than 5 and was insistant on me having it then rather than waiting. So, I had it done.

I was just wondering if anyone knows:
a) why it is we have to keep the pen out of the fridge for 15 minutes before taking the injection
b) if taking the injection sooner than the 15 minutes has any different effect
and c) what the effect is.

I've been left with a big, sore bruise, which has never happened before, so I'm guessing something different has happened in my body.

Also, since being on Humira, my abdominal pain is better, but I'm suffering from severe joint pain and fatigue, as well as getting headaches and catching every bug. Starting to wonder if it's actually worth it 'cause I'm coming home from work everyday and going straight to bed for a nap, after just a 3 hour shift :/

Sophie I haven't ever taken Humira but I've heard that you leave it out of the fridge for a while to let it get room temperature. I think it has something to do with making the injection less painful.

The only reason for taking it out the fridge some minutes before injecting is that it 'burns' less. Having cold liquid injected into you is not going to be greatly pleasant but it isn't going to kill you, or cause a big sore bruise by itself. Bruises are caused by blood seeping into the tissues, usually because you've broken a capillary blood vessel. In this case the needle hit one. Why you've not had it before is perhaps luck.

exactly what beth said. in truth i have done right out of the fridge and not notice much of a different. sometimes you bruises some times you don't.

it sort disturbing the nurse didn't take off the bottom

That's right Sophie, taking Humira out of the fridge for 15-20 minutes is only so the injection is less painful. I do this every time, because for me they always hurt like hell.
