Hi Everyone.

Just came back from the GI and had a few tests results come back and I am severely confused about the results.
For one thing my Thyroid is out whack, but that I was expecting because I haven't been taking my pills regularly because I keep forgetting to take my synthroid since I've been on prednisone. But my B12 came back pretty low and my Iron levels came back pretty high. Usually those two come back normal with every test I've had so far. Anyway he has put me on B12 shots for the next year and sent me for more blood tests to test me for some kind of gene thing related to high iron levels. And because of the B12 levels he is now thinking it may be Crohns and not Microscopic Colitis, he also said all my tests have always come back borderline that it makes it hard to tell to be sure exactly. When I asked him about my inflammation levels he said there is definetly something going on and didn't say much after that. Only that he wants to see me in 2 weeks after my gene tests.

Talk about getting hit by a boulder. :voodoo:

Sending support your way. I am sure all of this is a shock to you, no wants to hear they have Crohns.
It is good that you are going to get your B12 shots.
How long have you been on Prednisone, and at a what dose? have you lost any weight or been extra tired?

I've been on prednisone since Early January, slowly tapppering from 40mg, went from 40 to 35 than 30 and started up again, when back to 40 and now tapering at a rate of 2.5mg per week, now I am at 27.5mg. Yes I have been really tired but thought it was because of the prednisone since I haven't been sleeping much. No I haven't lost any weight, OH contraire lol, I've actually gained weight but I am thinking that is because of the prednisone. I've booked an apt with my family doctor on Friday to start my B12 shots. But the high iron levels now that was a surprise.

I am not understanding why he is thinking you have crohns just based on low VitB levels??? There are other reasons your Vit B can be low, it does not automatically mean crohns. I mean your iron levels are raised where in people with crohns, the usual is for them to drop not raise. I dont know, I am confused too.. In any event, I hope you can get some answers real soon....

Prednisone is a medicine that serves a purpose but we all hate it!!! Obviously you must have shown a lot of symptoms to be put on Prednisone. Were you having pain bleeding, other symptoms? What happens when you start to decrease the amount of Prednisone?

Hi. I assume you have hypothyroidism. and if you don't take your pills it will make you tired, also gain weight, prednisone does the same. Hope you find answers soon.

Hi all,

Yes you are right I do have hypothryodism, and will be starting my thyroid pills immediately, I had stopped them because the prednisone was keeping me up at night and thought that would help, big no no i guess.

As for the prednisone, no blood, just pain and diarrhea. As soon as I go off the pred i get urgency and just continue to go and go.

I start my B12 shots tomorrow morning, as for my iron levels I go for some gene testing and see him again in a few weeks, but I am slowly decreasing the pred by 2.5 per week.

Also I've been trying a gluten free diet for the past 4 weeks. Its rather interesting. Dont see much of a change yet, but I guess it can take time I was told. So will be sticking to it for a bit anyway.

My daughter had diarrhea for six months before she was diagnosed. Never had blood. Are you taking the prednisone in the morning?

Hi

Yes I am taking the prednisone in the morning. Sometimes I wonder if I'd sleep better if I took it at night. I have also been taking Xanax to help me sleep the Gi doctor said it was okay.

I start my first set of B12 injections tomorrow, the pharmacist said I can't do them myself as the doctor has asked for IM (intra-muscle) dosing. So this will be a fun loading few weeks, I get to see my family doctor once a week for 3 weeks than once a month for a year and possibly life if everything works out well

Did your daughters diarrhea ever get better.

each test I get I more and more confused.
lol

Daunting,

My guess is they would be testing for thalassemia.

Has your doctor told you to stop all supplements containing iron.

I would also request a copy of test result.

Sarah was tested for thalassemia both alpha or beta. She doesnot have either.

Ferritin can also act a marker of imflammation.

Yes she is on remicade right know, and doing soooo good. Just remember you are your own advocate. you can get a copy of all your test. Have a list of all your questions for next time you go to the doctor. I don't care if the doctor is busy or wants to leave right away. He already knows he has to answer all my questions. I may seem rude, but is my daughter.
