Hi my toddler suffers with constipation quite regular like she really struggles to push them out, sometimes it can take her an hour and half of pushing and screaming in pain tried laxitives and she eats enough fiber when she wants to eat. crohns runs in the family and just wondered if it could be linked in any way or worth mentioning to the doctor or is it always just diarrhea that's the symptoms?

There are MANY kids on this board who have constipation as a symptom of Crohn's and not diarrhea. Some kids have both. Some kids have no GI symptoms at all and still have Crohn's. It really varies - there is no typical.

My kiddo was diagnosed with Crohn's with not very many symptoms. One of her symptoms was constipation - besides that, she had lost a bit of weight and had abdominal pain. Her scopes showed ulcers in her colon and an inflamed terminal ileum (the very end of the small bowel).

I would definitely try to see a pediatric GI.

I had severe constipation as a child and had to have lots of enemas. At the time I was not diagnosed with Crohn's but I remember it not being fun. If you can have a doctor check your child out as soon as possible.

Yes, I heard that with my kid when she was 2 and 3.
"Can't be ibd, she doesn't have diarrhea".
She was dx 3 (almost 4 years of age).
With the family history of ibd, I would get it checked.
If they won't listen, go else where.

Also, work with her on not pushing so hard.
There is a chance that the rectum could prolapse.
I've lived through that you don't want to see it.

I use to use a warm bottle to squirt on the area while she was pushing.
Sitz bath are awesome too. You can buy these.
Distraction is helpful, I let her watch DVDs.

Fiber supplements it worse for my kiddo.
We just tried to make sure she gets its from food.

Has she tried Miralax?

One of my daughters also suffers from constipation. She is 8 years old, about 45 pounds and will plug the toilet every time she has a bm. They're huge! I don't know how they fit in her little body. I think seeing a GI is worthwhile for you. Good luck.

With Crohn's history in the family I would see a GI.

My daughter has Crohn's no bowel symptoms and still has no bowel symptoms 6 years are dx.
