Dear fellow Crohns suffers....

I have had Crohns for almost 9 years and when I first discovered I had it it was the hard way by needing emergency surgery to save my life but thats another story.

The reason for my post is that I have tried just about every drug known and nothing helped me until I started Martial Arts training. There are several specific stomach exercises that helps tremendously with the Crohns symptoms and within 3 mins of starting the exercise my biggest symptom "the urge to go" stops instantly. I was amazed, this specific exercise helped... how counter intuitive....

I have been doing my own thing since my Crohns disease started and never really visited the various Crohns forums but now that I discovered something that works, it is my hope that I can help a few others relieve their pain caused by this terrible disease.

I really didnt now how much the Martial Arts stomach exercises were helping keep my Crohns in remission until I stop training because of a knee injury. However that injury helped me realize that the exercises can work for others.

If anyone is interested in more info please post a reply.

PS: The reason I am not naming the stomach exercise is because their is not an official name for the technique.. After asking my teacher he says its called Tan Jon breathing....

that sounds interesting.
im not familiar with martial arts at all, but a number of people find relief with yoga and breathing exercises..stuff like that, if maybe it is similar?

what kind of stomach exercise is it?

welcome to the forum by the way :)

wow thats sweet...my aunt does sashanru(sp?) and i used to do it i got my orange belt lol (its like the 2nd one) but yea what is the stomach thing how do you do it i wanna try it^.^

Kello82...
Thanks for the warm welcome...

The last thing I thought when I signed up was this going to help my Crohns? But over the course of 2 yrs I was finally able to connect the dots. (Sure took awhile).

The breathing technique is not unique to any specific Martial Art form but it is mostly taught by the Korean disciplines and more specifically the Hapkido martial arts form.

After talking to the Hapkido Master about it he says that most studios do not teach the breathing technique anymore. Its turned into one of the lost arts but its really huge in its effect and he did say its somewhat similar to Tai Chi...

I tried looking on Youtube for some examples but none that I saw were doing it correctly and I searched the internet for a good explanation but couldn't find any either. So I will retype the sheet I was given by my instructor and post it here but without the pictures.

SpoonNinja..
Did you notice any difference in your Crohns when you were training?? BTW, usually Orange Belt is the 3rd belt... Orange was a good start and if you were to go back it would be easier than the first time you started.

Mark...
I started with Hapkido not knowing anything about Martial Arts. I would suggest going to different studios in your area and meet the various instructors. A good instructor is a very important part of training. Some instructors can be way to rough and others just give you belt promotions to get the testing fees and couldnt careless if you get better.

Tae Kwan Do is mostly kicking and Jujitsu is mostly grappling. IMHO, Hapkido is a great all around art because it mixes kicking like TKD with hand techniques like Akido, along with other techniques for good measure, like Kung Fu.

I am working on getting pictures because it helps a lot to see how to do the exercise. I will have them by tomorrow...

Where can I post the pictures when I get them so you can see them???

BTW, I have also been on many of the drugs you mention here, Remicade, Steroids, etc. AND especially pain killers Demerol, Morphine, Oxycontin, etc. by the handful, I was even on the Duragesic 100mcg patch... NOW I am NOT on ANYTHING. I have been off the pain patch and all pain killers for over 1 1/2 yrs...

i wasnt diagnosed at the time i was training but it did make me feel better. i dun remember the belt colors lol i only have the orange one and i stoped because she stoped teaching it and ive not found anywhere else in my area that teaches it! oh well i would like to start doing it again. what area do you live in?

Download them to photobucket.com, then used the URL in the popup of the postcard thingy in the toolbar at the top of box used to post.

I really am a techybot.... not.

haha dan really?
jeez, you sound so tech savvy though.
thingy? come on. thats to big a word for the rest of us here, we dont understand ;)

I just wanted to let you know that I am working on a nice page that will hopefully explain in detail how to do the Tan Jun breathing. I took a bunch of new pictures and am rewording the text to make it more understandable.

Please give me another day or so and I will have something posted through photobucket (thingy), which I just signed up for.

SpoonNinja...
I live way out in Los Angeles, CA... but I would suggest trying any Martial Arts again because even if I dont do the breathing the general exercise from practice makes my guts feel better. Maybe you can sign up for just a month to get reacclimated to it... The studio I go to has a monthly rate of about $100 and you can go up to 4x per week.

i will have to look around in my area i might beable to get into my aunts old dojo place and maybe get a discount^.^lol there are some other trainers there so i will talk to my mom about it ^.^

btw what belt are you?

Well everyone here are the pictures with explanations I promised you. I took a bit longer than I thought to compile but if it helps just one person its worth the work.

(sure hope this works)

Please if you have any questions just ask, the better you get at these the more effective it becomes... I do portions of these exercises when I have the pain or the urge to go.

BTW, I am currently a Blue Belt, however in our studio to get to black I need to first get through the Brown Belt and then are 3 different red belts. I guess I am committed in more ways than one... HAHA..

Hey thanks... Its gonna take a while before I get my Black Belt.

What is cool is I am learning some really awesome moves that are called hand techniques. They are used when someone grabs you and with a quick motion you can have the person begging for mercy.. No matter how they grab you. Some of the moves can be amazingly devastating.

You may have another name for them though...

Now I am doing Martial Arts to say alive. Like I mentioned before I hurt my knee and stopped training for 12 weeks and when that happened my Crohns flared up BIG TIME.

That hasn't happened in 1 1/2 years so when it started up I said to myself "self" something is wrong and then the light bulb went off. BTW, when the light bulb went off a day later I posted it on this forum, I was so excited that it may help others. Because this disease FRIGGIN SUCKS...

Also FYI, my Crohns is more unusual as I get constipated vs diarrhea and its fistulizing and even though I do NOT have to go I still have the urge to go VERY BADLY. (Its like having like dry heaves with your butt). After surgery, the surgeon asked if I had ever had my appendix out because it was not there. I told him no..

But anyways, MARTIAL ARTS training and BREATHING PUT MY CROHNS IN REMISSION. Holy Crap I said to myself.. I'd better get back to training or the alternative is most unpleasant which was already showing itself BIG TIME. This Crohns nearly killed me once. Not again.

So now I go 4 days a week and my symptoms are subsiding however this time they are slower to dissipate.

I know this is not that area for history so I'll stop here because I have probably gone on to much already...

So did you get a chance to look at the pictures????

wow you have no appendix? thats weired lol, but pretty cool! and my aunt t\tought me this thing where you can flip someone all the way around with 2 fingers on their neck...i think its a pressure point^.^ and yea i did see the pics its pretty cool! i was in school when i saw and my friend thought i was dieing or something because i was trying to do that with my tummy^.^ i guess i was doing it wrong:D and i dun mind hearing your story it sounds pretty cool! did you post it in the my story section? if not you should!! i mean really i wanna know more about this appendix thing!!!

Glad to hear you tried the technique. The master that helped me to understand the breathing told me to do it in private or people will think your crazy... LOL

The technique really works for me but it takes a bit of time to really learn how to do it properly, it took me awhile. The next step I would love to do is a video showing exactly how to move the abdominal muscles and post it on youtube or something like that. But that takes time and money I dont have at the moment but hopefully soon.

As far as my story... i am kinda uncomfortable posting it for several reasons. 1)Its over 4 pages long. 2)People probably wouldnt believe it. 3)they will think I am crazy... (related to #2)

If you wish I would be willing to email a copy just for you to read...

BTW, for some strange reason I was kicked off the forum for being a possible spammer....strange.. I'm the last person that would be a spammer....or second to last..

hey thanks for putting up the pics and descriptions. i cant focus enough to read through them all right now, but im defninitly interested!

yes, your account did get deleted it looks like. thats happened to some members, there seems to be a problem or something in the site that deletes real people by mistake, so sorry about that! and im sure one of the mods will see this and apologize as well :)

well, its your personal choice of course whether or not to share your story, but really, we dont think people are crazy here. you can pretty much share and say anything about yourself that you want, this is a judgment free zone :)
