hey guys,my name is kris im twenty four and got diagnosed one month ago with crohns colitis! i started off on pred 40 mg a day and now on 30mg tapering down 5mg every five days as directed by doc!

to be honest im feeling better with the crohns, no stomach pain diareah etc and started to form normal stools again the prblems im having but are weird like rapid heart beat now and then increased amount of floaters in my eyes bruising on my arms and legs etc and just generally feeling strange and anxiet alot!! is this the tapering down withdrawels? when i went to the docs with rapid heart beat he said my ecg was normal and my blood pressure was normal! do people experience problems like mine when on the pred?

also my hands and feet are sweating like mad!

any reply would be great thanks!

Hey man,

I was on pred for nearly a year and it gave me allsorts of funky side effects. . . .some not so pleasant others quite mild.

Trick is try not to worry and if you think you won't be able to stay cool or calm, pick up the phone to your doc !. . .thats what they are there for.

Chin up my friend. . .i am on here a couple of times a week but if i can help put you at ease i sure will do my best.

Oh yeah, welcome to the forum Bro

did you have any eye problems, the floaters are very annoying and the sweating of the hands is frustrating too!

No, well i say no but i did have shingles on one of my eyelids but it didnt cause any problem.

I did have jumpy vision too

Sounds like classic pred withdrawal. you've seen a doc, everything checks out, so I suggest you wait till a week or two after you've taken your last dose of pred, OK?

If things are still crazy then, then go see your doc again..

But it does sound like the ups and downs of pred withdrawal

krisecf, those sound like typical side effects from being on pred (there are tons) the eye floaters can happen even without being on pred though...I get them, I've read that eye floaters are quite common for those that have inflammation in the body.

Pred is considered a ban-aid/booster med until maintenance drugs kick in, or for short term relief, don't expect pred to put you in remission alone, more often than not, once people start to taper off of pred, their IBD symptoms start to re-appear especially if you're not on maintenance meds and or the maintenance meds haven't kicked in before you're done with the pred.

I also have crohn's colitis (CD affecting the colon), pred no longer works for me and as far as the other oral RX, I'm either allergic or non-responsive to them so I've gone tha "natural route" which helps some.

:)

The anxiety is definately from the pred! I got it really bad as well. Feeling generally weird all over. All wired but tired at the same time. This should ease off as you reduce the dose, but beware that, in my experience, this is where the moods/depression can kick in. You are tapering off pretty quick so you may be fine if not on the drug for very long.

Bruises - I get them - doc says its definitely the steroids - some days I look like I have been beaten up with no idea where they came from!

I get the floaters more often while on Prednisone..Also the tachycardia. Have you scrubbed your kitchen floor with a tooth brush yet?? That's my favorite side effect. Insomnia! I also would perspire more often usually on my brow. Good luck, with the taper.

I've had the rapid heart beat on pred as well. For some reason it would always be really bad right after breakfast if I drank orange juice (like too much of a glycimic jump or something?) and forget drinking liquor on roids for me! I landed in the ER with a consistent heart rate of 110 for hours and hours. I just finally checked myself out of there because I stayed all night and needed to take my kids to school. It went away later that day. That has happened to me multiple times since then as well - always when on pred.

I also have floaters (soooo annoying), but I can't say for sure if they started during pred use or a flare. I guess they will never go away.........

You're not alone. Also crohn's colitis and also floaters here.

Glad the pred is working. Symptoms you describe are common for pred. Curious if doc plans to put you on a maintenance drug and of so which drug.

Welcome to the board.

the rapid heartbeat could be related to the anxiety. i felt better on pred but had major issues when i tapered off.

but while i was on it, i did notice my anxiety symptoms increased at night, the heart racing, waking up abruptly in the middle of the night feeling nervous and stuff like that.

I've always bruised easily, even before getting sick with crohn's. My mom's the same way (she has UC herself) so there may be a connection to those that have an IBD or predisposed to getting one and bruising too, who knows, it's just my own speculation really...I also have the eye floaters, the worse I'm flaring the worse the eye floaters get, even without being on pred.

This disease really sucks....maybe I should look into taking vitamin K to help with the bruising, but I do find the rubbing extra virgin olive oil on them seems to heal them quite well and fast.

:)
