Starting around the heat of the summer this year I have been experiencing awful reflux with scary symptoms that have landed me in the er on several occasions. Eventually I went to my gp who after hearing my issues (chest pain, shortness of breath, bloating, upper abdoman pain/burning, extra mucus/lump in throat, upper back pains, etc.) said she highly suspects silent reflux to be the culprit. I was prescribed prilosec 40mg once daily and it seems to be helping finally after 3 weeks!! My breathing has improved and so have the pains in my chest. But my issue is I also have Crohn's disease and am on a lot of meds for that. My issue is I wanna reverse these health problems in my life I wanna help these meds out as much as I can and be as healthy as I can be but I have no clue were to start. I'm a 230 pound male 28 yrs old and I love to eat!!! I've really never had loss of appetite with Crohn's or anything so I've never really dietied with it. I'm up to try anything really just take into consecration I love to eat!! I eat about every to hours and I know that can be replace with alot healthier easier digested better for my stomach issue foods I just don't know what those foods r? Please help I'm ready to start taking better care of my body and stopping this progressive trend of getting in healthier as I get older. Thank u so much for ur help!!!

Hello again

Ok, generally, any food that's really greasy or fatty can aggravate acid reflux, so if you fry things like sausages, cook them in the oven instead, much healthier! Also, some find that citrus like lemons and strong oranges can affect their symptoms as well as anything that's really spicey.

I would say, try keeping a diary like you would for crohns, write down your meals and your symptoms, score them out of 10 .

Milk, icecream and yoghurt are all good for soothing the throat if your medication isn't enough.

If you want to introduce fruit and veg, do it slowly, one thing at a time, keep track of any new or worsening symptoms with the diary.

If you have trouble with raw veggies or fruit, try juicing them, this breaks down the fibre and makes it easier to digest them. It also means you still get all the good vitamins and minerals

Certainly healthy food and exercise are key to maintaining a stable weight and for healthy living. Congratulations on taking the first step towards getting better. I would first look at foods that may aggravate your reflux that are unhealthy. Are you eating lots of fatty foods like chips and cookies and processed meats? The high fat and meats are some of the foods that cause reflux and are unhealthy so would be best reduced. http://www.webmd.com/heartburn-gerd/features/heartburn-foods-to-avoid?page=2

Thanks guys!! I'm gonna start juicing I've heard a lot of good things about it especially for a person with Crohn's. I've basically for the last several years ate whatever I wanted I thank it made me feel like I didn't have a disease if that makes sense? Basically if I was eating like I was normal then I was normal. But all that has got me is sucker and sicker. I'm tired of it I'm atleast gonna start doing all I can to fight back against this disease and meds alone aren't gonna do it I've figured that out first hand. I like the idea of a food diary I'm gonna do that. Ill keep u guys up to date on my progress thanks so much!!!

I think I can understand what you're saying, I always used to say 'I'm ok ' even if I was in hospital in agony. It's somewhat normal not to want to admit to being so I'll. This is a difficult thing to face up to. I hope this new approach helps you deal with your condition better and get back to health.

I think juicing is a great idea, just be careful what you juice because some things may aggravate your reflux so there may be some trial and error. Juicing is far from an unhealthy persons task, so many health nuts and fitness enthusiasts are juicing. You can definitely feel good about and from juicing. Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi there,
I too have always ate healthily, long before Crohns was eventually diagnosed 2 years ago. Yes, blending soups etc helps your digestive tract. However, I know milky products strangely enough can aggravate the stomach. SO, drinking a glass of milk can encourage reflux!!!! I have a hiatus hernia and take Cimetidine for that. Grapes too, are a No, no!!!! I wish you well again soon.

Only a suggestion, some report a cure, others no improvement........

What Everybody Ought To Know (But Doesn’t) About Heartburn & GERD

This is a serious issue because acid stopping drugs promote bacterial overgrowth, weaken our resistance to infection, reduce absorption of essential nutrients, and increase the likelihood of developing IBS, other digestive disorders, and cancer. The pharmaceutical companies have always been aware of these risks. When acid-stopping drugs were first introduced, it was recommended that they not be taken for more than six weeks. Clearly this prudent advice has been discarded, as it is not uncommon today to encounter people who have been on these drugs for decades – not weeks.

Heartburn Cured

"A biochemist friend of mine told me that he knew a microbiologist who had a theory as to why low-carb diets stopped GERD cold that involved bacterial overgrowth. I told my friend that I didn’t think that bacteria had anything to do with it..........
....... he outlined for me his theory of why GERD happens and why a low-carb diet fixes it. His theory makes perfect sense, and now that I understand it, I buy into it 100 percent."

Not that I,m plugging anything here but I,ve found a certain boxers health grill is useful its certainly gets the yeuchy oily fat out of burgers, sausage and we all know they aren't,t good for crohns.worth a pop when your feeling better and want to add variety back into your diet(hope that happens soon)
