I wanted to know with Crohn's disease if my body has a harder time processing Alcohol than a person who does not have the disease. I know my body has a hard time absorbing many things, so I didn't know if there was much info out there on this subject. There probably is not because they tell you to stay away from alcohol in general, but have found myself in a bit of a predicament.

I was recently arrested for a DUI, I am very good about being responsible and limiting the amount I drink and the amount of time before I drive so I was very confused as to how I was under in the influence.

Going forward I will not drink and drive under any circumstances, but I am now left wondering if my results were skewed due to a possible inability to process Alcohol and if I have a legal argument if I go to trial.

I have had 10 inches of my intestine taken out in the beginning of 2012 and my stomach has had such a hard time processing almost anything I drink or eat.

Any help or guidance of personal experience or where I can look to would be much appreciated.

As far as I'm aware its the liver that processes the alcohol, not the intestine. Although it does go through the gut it does not process it at all (if anything i'm sure it would find it harder to absorb so there wouldn't be as much)

Personally I don't drive if I've had a drink, as 1 pint could put you over (especially as you get older). As you have found out it's just not worth it. I'm afraid you don't have anything to blame but yourself on this one

I don't drink and drive, but when I go out for a heavy drinking session, the next day is like I'm on laxatives, constantly going to the loo etc...Some might ask why I keep doing this to myself? If I'm honest, I enjoy going out having a good time

My first sign of crohn's was getting violently ill from drinking only small amounts of alcohol...not sure about the legal argument as far as processing or absorption rate goes, but I know for sure crohn's has caused my body to severely disagree with alcohol. I always kind of had a naturally high tolerance as a 6'4" 215lb male and could drink 3-4 drinks without feeling any remote hint of headache or hangover. I was under a lot of stress with work and a death in the family when my crohn's "officially started". I could have 1-2 drinks and start feeling awful until I went to sleep, then I would inevitably awake in the middle of the night and have to run to the toilet to vomit and every time would vomit blood. The last 3 times I drank I threw up blood and each time was a diff kind of alcohol and only a single drink, its as if I became allergic to it.

I've not had any problems with alcohol and my Crohn's and not noticed any difference in how I feel after a couple of glasses of wine. I strongly endorse rygon and shellyboy's comments about not drinking anything and driving though - even a small amount of alcohol can impair your judgement and that's all it takes to get in or cause an accident.
