First, hello everyone! I'm looking for some advice and/or support.

I'm a 26 year old male who, for the last month & 1/2 have been suffering from lower right abdominal pain. The pain was at first very sharp and made me nauseous, so much so that I went to the ER. At the ER, I had a CT scan, blood work, stool sample, as well as urine, and all showed negative. I was flabbergasted because while I was in the ER, I was in so much pain as well as retching quite a lot. This pain continued to persist pretty much constantly, with no relation to what I ate. I lost my appetite and became very fatigued and began to lose weight as a result. I actually ended up going to the ER several more times out of pain and each time - nothing. My bowel habits began to change - I had increased gas, more-than-usual smelly stools, etc.

About halfway through one doctor prescribed me Cipro and this did nothing except give me antibiotic-induced diarrhea for almost two weeks, causing me to lose even more weight. I literally went from 156 lbs. of muscle and health to 137.5 lbs (today). I feel awful. Because I'm a veteran I get seen at the VA, which is actually pretty terrible. I think I've seen my actual primary care doctor once, otherwise it's just been a bunch of newbies. I've since begun to see a new doctor via private insurance at my college and just received a referral to see a GI doc next week. I assume the next step is a colonoscopy?

After all the tests and CT scans, one thing the docs are thinking is IBS OR Chron's Disease, but it seems that I don't present with either of these 'typical' symptoms, other than right-sided abdominal pain. For example, other than that antibiotic-induced diarrhea, I don't have frequent diarrhea or constipation at all. No bloody stools either, as far as I can tell. (Bit of a fib: I had diarrhea the other morning, but it was after something I ate upset my stomach, I'm quite sure).

My abdominal pain is right over where the appendix is at. (I should mention that it seems highly unlikely it's the appendix because I've literally had like 3 CT scans since this all started). The pain also seems to radiate down into my upper inner right thigh and sometimes around my whole belly accompanied with bloating and nausea. Sometimes these symptoms will last for days with no avail. Sometimes passing gas gives some relief.

I noticed that in the last two days my stool has had flecks of red covering it. I don't mean to be gross, but it looks like maroon-colored sprinkles on the stool and within it. These bits appear to have some density to them and don't appear to be blood, but I've no idea. I sometimes also have anal itching near the top of my buttcrack. Again, sorry for being so descriptive!

To summarize my symptoms: localized, lower right-sided abdominal pain (just left of hip bone), peripheral pain in upper inner thigh, nausea, bloating, indigestion, general malaise, fatigue (feeling like TOTALLY wiped out). Also when the pain presents itself in the right side, it seems to bubble and whir constantly and I pass a lot of gas, sometimes very smelly.

Other things: I take zoloft 50 mg for anxiety/depression. I avoid painkillers because, well, we know those aren't really good for the stomach. I just drink ginger tea and use a heating pad for relief when the pain gets really bad.

I really am just looking for any similar experience or help or even just SUPPORT. This has been a very difficult time for me, seeing my body be diminished by whatever this is. I was feeling VERY healthy and looked great before this pain began. Emotionally I am a wreck and sometimes find myself just holding my wife and crying out of frustration and pain. Whatever this is it is really taking a toll on my body and mind and I just want some certainty at this point.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I look forward to any responses.

Hi Rayzor, welcome!! As a parent of a sufferer, I can't really address your pain but your symptoms are common on this forum. I hope you get some firm answers soon.

The red flecks in your stool sounds like dried blood to me unless you know of something that you've eaten that could cause it.

Good luck!!

Hi Rayzor and :welcome:

I'm glad you found your way here. As Dex said your symptoms are common here and unfortunately Crohns can be very difficult to diagnose and no one seems to be typical. CT scans for some people aren't very useful for picking up Crohns particularly if it is in your ileum. I think you are going to have to start having some of the more invasive tests like colonoscopy, endoscopy, barium or pill cam so the docs can visualise your bowel. Have you seen a Gastroenterologist? If so when is your next consultation? In the meantime you might like to keep a diary -

This is a great place for support and info so stick around and browse the forums. Good luck and welcome aboard!

All the best, :)

Hi Razor, :welcome: to a place where you sound just like one of us! We don't all have the exact symptoms and many are here who are still waiting for a diagnosis. It took a year of tests, whilst I was in agony. Colonoscopies are usually the best way to find the disease. Sounds like you could have strictures, which causes pain, nausea and bloat along with intermitten Diareah or Constipation but not necessarily in that order. Not all people with Crohns bleed. I don't. The most common areas are in the appendix, had mine taken out and was sought to be leaking. Long story short you have to get a Gi to get a colonoscopy and or a SMFT, (small bowel follow throught) they should narrowed intestines.

Try just drinking fluids and Ensure, and if the pain subsides then it could very well be. I never have a diareah induced by Cipro, only flagyl. But as everyone knows I always say not too people are alike. Good luck with your Gi appt. Keep us updated. Check out the low residue diet plan, it helps with getting rid of the pain. Glad you are here, hope you feel better soon.

Hi rayzorblade and welcome. Crohn's symptoms vary so much in type and severity that it's very hard to pin down "typical" sets of symptoms. It can even be common for an individuals symptoms to change with time.

I agree with Dexky, the red flecks sound like old blood that is originating higher up in your digestive system. It gets dark because it has time to dry out and then as food passes through, it scrapes it off.

Are you booked in for a colonoscopy with biopsy? It sounds like this would be the logical next step in working out whether it is IBS or IBD.

Thank all of you so much for the welcoming! I am really happy to have joined this community because I need the support in this uncertain road.

@ Dusty: I just got referred to a GI doc and have my first appointment scheduled for next Wednesday. Now that I finally have the consultation, it feels like it's taking even longer for that day to come!

@ Pen: A whole year of pain to figure out what was going on?! SHEESH! It's only been like a month and a half of this pain and I'm already in agony. I really can't even begin to imagine the kind of stuff many here have suffered and I hope I can have the kind of courage to face down this thing. Lately it feels really frightening!

@ Dexky, seaofdreams: Hmmm. To be honest, it's possible that the red flecks COULD be some red quinoa I had two days earlier, but these red flecks only presented themselves in my morning stools. (Usually just have 1-2 a day). Also, I've never had a problem fully digesting quinoa before, so that'd be strange. Tomorrow if I have them again, I think I can be pretty sure it's dried blood, huh? Kind of scary when I think about it.. uuugh

Just want to say that, so far from reading some stuff on this forum, you guys give me a lot of hope to stay strong during this whole thing. Just to know that other people are suffering the same kind of pain/uncertainty and getting through it.

Hi, when I was first diagnosed my symptoms were similar to yours. Absominal pain, nausea, vomiting whenever I ate anything. Also general not feeling well when I wasn't actually in pain. The flecks could be the quinoa. If you do have Crohn's then inflammation can vary from day to day, so what you can digest varies day to day.

Hey and welcome !
The unknown is always scary but your not alone, lots of advice here. I too had similar symptons but with about 20-30bm a day. Are they booking you in for a colonscopy or endscopy? When is your next appt?
Good luck and any questions just fire away.

Hi Rayzor
and welcome

Sounds like you're going thro a bad un, and I wouldn't be fobbed off with a dx of IBS neither! I had this dx for 15 years! I don't dwell on it now, it is a functional disorder and it does exist, but yours needs to be investigated further cos it sounds like an IBD to me!
here is a table of comparisons

http://ibdcrohns.about.com/cs/ibs/a/diffibsibd.htm

You will see in this table, you do not lose weight with IBS!

Now, keep a journal, and document everything, and when you have your consultation with gastro, write everything down, questions and answers.
Your pain is where mine is, the terminal ileum, near the appendix. When I was blocked and in hospital 9 months ago, I had severe pain radiating into my lower back, hip and thigh too. just keep your eye on your temp, if it raises, infection could be setting in. And straight to ER if you projectile vomit, sure sign of blockage.
Try not to frighten yourself with horror stories on the net, there's lots of support here, we'll all been thro this and can help ease your anxieties.
let us know how you get on on Wed.
lotsa luv

Hello Rayzor,

I know how you feel, it took me years to get a DX. It's annoying when the doctors can't figure out what is wrong and you're suffering. Your symptoms sound like mine but, like everyone says we are all different.

Good luck, just wanted to wish you well.
