Anyone know why some GI's use an NG tube and some administer it orally? I am supposed to be having the NG tube but dont know why he is choosing the more invasive way. Anyone know??

Thanks

Are they giving you the NG tube as well or did they say you have to drink it? Im not sure which is more difficult ... I just don't understand why the different preference.

I don't know Wendy. You are required to drink a large amount of fluid, about 2 litres, in the hour prior to the procedure. Do they think you won't be able to do that?

Dusty. :)

I am physically capable of. Right from the get go he said with an NG tube. He also explained the procedure to me. I dont know why he is using the NG tube... I figured their must be good reason..

Okay, well the only other reason I can think of is to have better control over the actual fluid intake, (((shrug))). Sorry I can't be of more help.

Dusty.

I'll let you know when I get the letter in the mail with the details what form my doctor wants...when are you having yours?

Probably just a personal preference of his, the dr may have had more positive experience with NG tube vs. oral. It is a whole lot of stuff to drink (if it is the same as what I used before MR enterography) I personally would have liked to have gotten it down another way... or paid someone else to drink it. :)

no - this is barium I think. But I know what you mean with wanting to get the stuff down an easier way. I found it the colder the better and to drink fast...I timed myself and tried to beat my last time with each new cup.

my letter is in the mail. dad briefly read it and said i have to drink something and hour before the scan? i'm assuming they give that something once i'm there? i'm going home in 2 days so will give you more details when i get it.

Hmmm, I don't know what the deal with the NG tube is - I've had 3 Ct scans and only ever had to drink the stuff.

Gee I go in a week...I hope I only have to drink the stuff.
Do they also inject dye into you as well?
Is that with an IV?

8 more days until mine CTE! :O. Have to drink one of the preps that's used to clean your guts out. 1.5 L in 30 minutes. Gross...
Then the IV dye to boot!

I had a CT enterography and I had to drink 3 drinks i cant think of what it was, sorry. Then after i was done with that I was on the table getting an IV and then they injected contrast into me. it wasn't bad at all. yeah i gagged on the drink haa. but I got it down. Not sure about the NG tube? are they clearing out your stomach?

They aren't cleaning out my stomach...I can't eat for 4 hours prior.
The NA tube I think is instead of drinking that stuff?
I noticed in this thread some had the tube..just wondering why..
unless they couldn't drink it.

I had the NG tube. It sucked! I asked the dr to drink the barium and she said that with the tube the liquid is injected straight to the bowel, therefore its moving faster and does not dissolve from stomach fluids. She said thats the way to achieve the best image. Did I mention it sucked? I was lying on the x-ray bed tube inside my nose feeling i was going to puke, a nure came in I said "I am going to puke" she said "here" and left a plastic bowl next to me and left the room. Ummmm hello I am laying on my BACK" Then I felt the urgency to go to the bathroom, a doctor came in, I tell him "I have to go to the bathroom" " In half an hour " he said "WHAT? I cannot make it that long" " Be patient" and he left. Did I mention it sucked? and all that just a month after my resection, while I still had the folley tube.

It SUCKED big hairy donkey balls but I think I already said that.

I think the difference is that one is CT enterography, and one is CT enteroclysis... the former is just oral, whereas the latter requires a tube. And, I would argue that both suck, big time.

I made my husband try some of the barium once, and he told me it was kind of like a fruity smoothie. Ugh. Awful. I would pick the tube anytime just to not have to force myself to drink it! : )
