I have been on Asacol since around June 2012. It helped a lot with abdominal pain and joint pain but didn't do a lot for suppressing the rectal irritation and bleeding. I had used steroid foams and suppositories in the past without very good results. My doctor prescribed Canasa suppositories but said they can only be used for 6 to 8 weeks. He said any suppository or topical medication rectally for extended periods thin the lining of the membranes and could cause irritation. The Canasa worked great but after six weeks I still had very mild irritation so I stopped it and switched to Anusol once a day. All of the inflammation is gone after about a week and a half of the Anusol. I didn't think to ask my GI how soon I can use the Canasa again if I need to but I plan to when I see him again or I can call any time and leave him a message. I was curious if there are any others here that have experience with Canasa and what regimen may have worked.

I used Canasa suppositories every day, sometimes twice a day, for 2 years. I've not heard of Canasa thinning the rectal lining, but that cortisol or any steroid will do that. Canasa is nonsteroidal.

It worked great for me for pain and some amount of inflammation, but only cortisol suppositories and or steroid enemas stopped bleeding for me.

I've been using Canasa suppositories since the end of January. I use 2 a day and they've helped although, I still get mucus and some blood. I have an appt with the doctor on April 11th to be checked on and discuss how I'm doing on my current meds. I'm afraid that I haven't heard about the thinning of lining either.
