It seems most of the almond, coconut and hemp milks and ice creams contain the seaweed extract carrageenan which in studies has been shown to induce colitis in animals.

Are there any grain and soy free beverages that don't have this? I'm open to almond, hemp, cashew, coconut, etc for milk and ice cream alternatives.

It just takes some hunting and a lot of reading of labels. There are almond milks out there without it, but I haven't found a coconut milk yet that doesn't have it. Silk brand almond milk doesn't have it.

Alternatively, you can make your own (almond and coconut). I've seen lots of recipes online (but I personally don't have initiative to do that...too lazy).

I have made my own but sometimes it's nice not to have to do that and strain the pulp. I know silk does but they have other junk in the ingredients and it's not organic. It seems all the big companies use this ingredient.

Oh I agree with you on that one. I only use Silk in a pinch when I can't get to my local grocery which does carry organic almond milk. I didn't mention that alternative since that store is only in CA ("Fresh & Easy"), not in NY where you are. Sorry. Perhaps a Whole Foods may carry some if you have one near you?

I usually send the company an email asking about ingredients that I have concerns about. I can't tolerate cashews, so I haven't asked this company about the natural flavour because I cannot consume the product. Let us know what you find out.

If you have a Trader Joe's near you, they carry a canned coconut milk that has no additives or preservatives. I haven't been able to find a carton of almond, coconut, or hemp that don't have additives.

If you go to your local healy food store (whole foods, trader joes) look for soy, rice, etc milk alternatives but not the ones in the fridge. Look for the ones in paper cartons which are usually on the shelves. Most of those will not contain any carregenousn (spelling). Hell, those will usually contain nothing but water, and soybeans!

I too had been having a hard time finding a milk alternative without carrageenan. I just found almond milk without it in there. Its the Kroger's store brand of original almond milk. I found it next to the milk and not in the "organic" section.
