Hi there! My daughter was diagnosed 11 years ago with Crohn's. We went through years of hospitalizations, Remicade infusions, Humira, and multiple pills too numerous to count. Three weeks ago at the age of 23 she had an ileostomy; the very thing we were hoping to prevent. Miraculously, her health seems better already, and her outlook and attitude is positive. She was thrilled to be able to eat corn on the cob, among other things that used to make her violently ill. My question to some of those who are seasoned osteomates...where in the world can I find really great undies for a 23 year old? The ones that hold the ostomy pouch seem to be made for a much older person. I understand that the design may need to vary to accomodate a pouch, however, even the patterns and designs seem "old" for her. Also, is the pouch necessary? Can she comfortably wear her regular undies, or does the pouch really give added support and peace of mind?
Thanks in advance for any and all advice! My best to all of you! : )

Hi Reid :welcome:

I'm sorry to hear that your daughter has been unwell enough to require having an ileostomy, but many of us have found that our lives have improved radically since having this operation. That is not to say that there will be no difficulties, but her stoma nurse and the members here should be able to help with many of them.

If your daughter wants to use an ostomy pouch, there are lots of practical, and even sexy, products available to cover up your bag if you need or just want to. This list is from 2thFairy:

A lot of us, myself included, do not use covers and some use them only for intimate times. There is also a lot of variety in the way in which ostomy bags are worn - tucked inside regular undies, outside regular undies, even outside trousers/jeans with a loose shirt over the top, as well as with special garments. Your daughter will need to experiment to find the way in which she is most comfortable.

She might need to be a bit careful with things like corn on the cob - too much fibre can block up the stoma. And that's very painful; I know from my own experience.

Again, welcome. Please feel free to come here with any questions you or your daughter might have. In fact, your daughter will find lots of people her own age on here and might like to talk with them herself.

I forgot to suggest that you have a look at the Stoma SubForum (under General IBD Discussion). There are lots of interesting threads in there.

I don't have anything further to add as you have already had some really helpful info, I just wanted to say 'hi' and welcome to the forum :)

I am glad things have started to improve for your daughter - long may it continue! Out of interest is she still on any meds?

Hi, I am so pleased your daughter feels much better but I am amazed she is allowed corn on the cob!! Has she spoken to anyone about eating with an ileostomy? It can become blocked and there are a whole host of things we should avoid. Things like corn, mushrooms, nuts, seeds, potato skins etc. Please take advice and get as informed as possible. It would be a shame to have a set back so soon.

As for underwear she will soon find what is best for her. There are alsorts of things out there to try, pouch covers, sexy lingerie and she will be fine.

Good luck, Kaz xxx[/
