Been diagnosed with 'post infectious IBS' :-@

I have a bad case of salmonella in may but a month after that I was still getting really bad pains on my left side which radiates to my left shoulder and have alot of mucus and blood with my BM. I went to the doctors and they sent me for blood tests. The results showed;
  • Low B12
  • Low Folate
  • Low white blood count
  • Low Neutrophils
  • Activated Lymphocytes
So my doctor booked me an appointment to see a GI. I was booked in for a colonscopy which found 2 apthous ulcers on my terminal ileum, biopsies where took but came back negative for crohns etc. SO i was diagnosed with 'post infectious IBS' however my problem is how can IBS cause all the problems with my blood?? Has anyone else had these problems with there blood or do you think my doctor rushed into a diagnose?? Im still having all the pains and problems with my BM and im not sure what to do. I think it might be a problem with my spleen as spleen is on the left side.

Yes I do think you have been rushed into a diagnosis. With IBS, all tests including blood should come back normal. And one test is not enough.

Plus, CD is very hard to diagnose as it can occur anywhere from mouth to anus.

I had an IBS diagnosis in 2007 after one normal colonoscopy and years later I am iller than ever with suspected IBD.

Hi and welcome to the forum, could it be infected diverticulitis which can give you left sided pain?? Did you have any symptoms before you had the salmonella or have they come on suddenly... I'm not an expert but from what many people say is that their results come back negative for crohn's and there is an undiagnosed club in the forum which might give you some advice. I have to say it doesn't sound like IBS to me as it doesn't usually give you blood with BM. Your B12 may be low due to the positioning of the ulcers in your TI... Request a CT scan and hope you get some answers soon

Ii had the left side abdominal pain and really bad diarrhea but after the salmonella infection everything got worse. and no i havent been tested for that. My GP has booked me in for a white cell scan, do you know what this is?

sorry never heard of it, as you know it can take ages and many many investigations before they diagnose crohn's or UC just keep pestering them if your symptoms persist. Any abdominal pain can cause shoulder tip pain due to the positioning of the nerves. Have you had an ultrasound scan yet to look at your spleen? is the pain above high up or low down?? try not to self diagnose as you'll have yourself up to high do...

IBS does not cause structural changes in the bowel, so apthous ulcers would actually rule out IBS as a cause for your symptoms.

The negative biopsies don't rule out IBD either. My son had two apthous ulcers in his terminal ileum and the GI diagnosed him with Crohns there and then, his sister also has Crohns, but the biopsy results came back negative. He has since required surgery and the pathology obtained from theatre also stated there was no conclusive evidence of Crohns. Despite these negative results he does have Crohns disease.

The low folate and B12 could also point to disease in the terminal ileum as this is where they are absorbed, so active disease in that area will affect your ability to absorb them.

i havent had a ultrasound scan yet and my pain is just below my ribs. ive got an appoitment with my GI in a month so i'll ask about it then

I'd see another GI for sure. There's no way that sounds like IBS. Its also my understanding that people who suffer From IBS do not have blood in their stool as a symptom. That's something that needs treatment and soon.

Someone said diverticulitis/diverticulosis in your other post about this. It could be a possibilty to look into/as your GI about. I had bad inflammation from my rectum throughout my decending colon, it started clearing up after rounding that corner. My original GI said that I most likely had UC left it at that and never heard from him again.I suggest going to anouther GI before your symptoms get worse I left mine go untreated for a year(that and no one wanted to treat me...went to the ER 3 times and still didnt get a second look, finally I got admitted to the hospital due to anemia then I got my crohns diagnosed) The disease ripped through my entire colon giving me a diagnosis of severe crohns...fun fun

Greetings and welcome!

I'm sorry you're having so much trouble :(

As far as I know, IBS doesn't cause blood in stool or persistent pain, of course, I'm no GI. I'd get a second opinion, however.

Hello
I don't want to be THAT person...but this is the third post on this forum with the same questions and everything...it's almost written word for word.

At any rate it sounds like you should make an appointment with anouther GI for a second opinion. I don't want you to get worse(trust me I had problems with a GI who never contacted me back and my crohns went from mild to severe and covering my entire colon) Good luck I hope you find answers soon

Yep i've had one of those. They draw blood, seperate the cells, tag the white cells with nuclear material and then inject them back. Then, you will be scanned at various points through the day. The nuclear material will be "attracted" to inflammation in your body. From what I can remember, no prep, special diet etc and you can eat and drink during the whole thing.

Mine found inflammation in my guts, but following additional normal tests, the result was changed.
