Do you ever take these when having a bad day? A pharmacist told me once that I shouldn't. I still do, although rarely. Sometimes I just cannot handle going to the loo again and just want a break. It can get difficult, especially when out in certain places - like someones house. I went to a house party once and had a queue of people waiting outside the bathroom whilst I was in there doing my thing... You know that one where you blame the smell on the person before you? Lol!

Anyway, diarrhea tablets, do you take them?

Pharmacist's sometimes are very helpful and sometimes very stupid! I'm undiagnosed but I get Lopermide on prescription. Since we have medical issues we have to take them as you say in order to live some kind of a life.

I take them when I have an attack which is how I was told to take them by 2 GI's.

If your Dr is happy with you taking them then I wouldn't worry.

I've never asked my Doc... I'm scared she will tell me off and send my picture to all the local chemists saying 'DO NOT SELL DIARRHEA TABLETS TO THIS WOMAN'

Lol!

Hi

I've taken Loperamide for 13 years now.It became permenant following right side hemi colectomy when i was 29.Nobody really explained that this would happen post op apart from one Dr who told me i'd have loose motions for the rest of my life.I tried a few different meds back then (codeine, questran, fybogel) but i ended up staying on loperamide for good.As the CD slowly went from moderate to severe over the next decade no Dr ever told me to stop taking loperamide.Since then i've read that patients with active UC should not take anti 'D' meds.As the CD got worse the loperamide didn't give me the desired affect but the combination of active CD & short gut made it a nightmare situation.
Following the 2nd resection 3 years ago my gut was left even shorter so the Dr's upped the loperamide. The CD was active within weeks of the operation so i faced an even more difficult situation.15 months on from that operation i finally found the help i needed to give me complete remission from CD.I'm stuck with taking Loperamide for the rest of my life due to my short bowel.
Thankfully now i'm in complete remission i average 1 perfect BM per day.

I hope things improve for you ASAP

Best Wishes

'i average 1 perfect BM per day' - lucky you!

It's not even 12 noon and I have been to the loo about 4 times already, and they were the worst type too :-(

I didn't mean to come across as sarcastic - if it seemed like that please accept my apology.

I had one hell of a battle with the dreaded 'D' for a long time.
It won't help but you have all my sympathy.

Noooooo you didn't! Sorry if it sounded as if I thought you sounded sarcastic! Does that make sense? Anyway, no sarcasm from me, just jelousy. Lol!

Thanks for your well wishes :) x

If something more long term is needed, I have heard good things about psyllium husks. Dusty's Roo uses them for short bowel syndrome. They soak up some of the excess water in the stool, bulking and firming it. Less risk of your body becoming accustomed to it. Though make sure you take it with plenty of fluids, and start with a small dose and build up, to avoid a blockage.

Are psyllium husks herbal? Do you recommend them daily?
What is Dusty's Roo and short bowel syndrome?

I'm very interested in what you have to say, I really do not like taking diarrhea tablets as I can't imagine it does anything good for my body! Stopping what it wants to do naturally... although unfortunate!

i had the exact same problem.....if you drink any alcohol it will irritate to f*ck....you may find yourself feeling bloated and sick....I went out after my pills and because i drank alcohol i made myself sick, i only had two drinks and threw up because diarrhea is dehydration and drinking will make that worse....

i wouldnt risk it if i was you, maybe have a quiet one tonight and go out tomorrow when you feel better???

I don't plan on drinking tonight? You've confused me Jack...

No problem.
A CD patient can have short bowel syndrome following removal of sections of bowel.

What CD meds did you take?
If you have active CD anti 'D' meds may slow down your bowel but that is only really masking the problem.

You will find many people on here who can offer advice.
Hopefully this forum will help you.

Is CD short for Crohns Disease? I will get used to this forum soon ;-)

I've not had any operations.
I have loose bowel movements maybe 29 days out of 30 - no exaggeration. In fact I think something is wrong if I don't!
I probably have diarrhea (as in 3 or more very loose movements) 26 days out of 30!
Is this not normal for a Crohn's sufferer?

Since I was 16, I have been on:
Asacol (stoppped taking these as I just passing them whole, so no had no effect)
Pentasa (can't remember why I stoppped with these)
And another 1 which I can't remember the name of - they made my hair fall out :-(

I'm sure I have been on more than that, but I have an awful, awful memory.

You know, writing all this down has triggered something - maybe it's time to visit my specialist!

CD - yes Crohn's D.
Nobody on here will think you exaggerate about The number of BM's per day.
We all know CD only too well.
The med which made your hair fall out? immunosuppresion?
6mp? Azathioprine? Methotrexate?

If you have used the above list of meds with no success & now don't take them my guess is you have active CD.

I hope you find a way to get it under control ASAP

Best Wishes

Azathioprine - rings a bell!

What is the solution for active crohns? :sign0085:

Anybody would think you're my GP the way I'm going on... :p Lol! I appreciate your replies, thank you :)

Totally understand your point of view, but your body isn't acting naturally, your digestive parts are diseased and as such are acting abnormally because of that. :)

Treating active CD is something only your GP or Gastro Consultant can help you with. This should improve the D!

To me anti-d meds short term or frequent use is not a problem. It's the best solution in a bad situation. Chronic D left unchecked/ treated can lead to dehydration and poor nutrient absorption which is already an issue with CD.

I take Lomotil as needed for diarrhea. It's basically like a prescription strength Imodium (regular Imodium does nothing for me). I try not to take it too often as I don't want my body to get used to it or my bowel to get lazy or anything like that. But my GI and GP have both said that I can take it as often as I need to. That usually ends up being about once a week. I only take it when things are quite bad and/or I have plans that day that involve driving, walking, or something else of that nature that I can't be stopping in the bathroom every 15 minutes. Sometimes Lomotil tends to constipate me (I think it's a cumulative effect of the Lomotil plus all my other meds), so as odd as this sounds, whenever I take it I also pop a couple of stool softners as I don't want to get too backed up.

Ahhh thanks very much Cat-a-Tonic, I'm going to ask my Dr for a prescription :) What are the stool softeners you use? I would try without first and see how I get on, but just in case

I take Colace (actually, the generic store brand version of colace, which seems to work just as well). It doesn't cause d like a laxative would, it just helps me not get constipated. I don't have the bottle with me, but I believe the label says you can take up to 6 per day, so I'd start out taking 1 or 2 and see if you feel like you need more than that. If you find yourself getting constipated, make sure to drink lots of water too, as that's probably the best way to avoid constipation.

I'm prescribed Codeine Phosphate 30mg 4 times a day. It's help with pain but also with the terrible D!!! I also take umm can't remember the name but it's basic diarrhoea tablets. I am generally up all night on the loo, bad D and then during the day as well so I would estimate at least 10x on a good day :D I have always had my Codeine since I was diagnosed and don't think I would of had the quality of life without it. Though now it just doesn't make much difference but that a whole different issue :D I would recommend using them though. I mean, if you have a headache, you take some pain killers, what's the difference with a bit of D?!
