Diet? they should call it a LIFET because my diet has helped me become so so much better!!!
had cd for 19 yrs. always had the runs. until i changed my lifestyle dramatically.
doctors always told me "eat whatever you want" . my question is, do these drs want to exacerbate my cd to a point that they can make money off hacking up my gonnechtegazoink?
4 months ago i had 4 sections of my small intesty that the young dr i see wanted to resection all of them. it was so narrow and inflamed that i had multiple bowel obstructions and my life was losing all of the goodness in it.
i have had abcesses, it affected my skateboarding and ability to make my art, my love left me, and that was the last straw.

i had only been on immuran with no luck controlling cd, but i saved all my money for this laptop and began researching the natural ways to help my symptoms. I am on immuran, im not dropping my current treatment, but im not tryin to get jerked around with remicade and insurance or lack thereof, and im definitely not letting somebody i do not trust cut me open.

heres the lowdown. try an elimination diet.

forget wheat. try living without it, i barely ever touch it. maybe u can digest it fine without symptom maybe not. its in everything so if you are eating alot of it consistently and u are consistently in pain, go figure.
eliminate amimal fat. even animals altogether if u can maintain protein intake.
most veggie burgers contain wheat, but i ieat them at a low enough frequency to stay chill. tofu is the bomb. love that stuff. mix it with rice and some lite teriyaki sauce. boo yaa.
forget dairy. have lowfat cheese if you must, i actually do fine with cheese but terrible with milk. plus dairy creates mucous in your guts and that exacerbates symptoms. dairy has alot of really bad chemicals in it that we dont know are doing us harm. supplement your calcium.
MY DIET AS OF NOW
oatmeal, eggs, veggie bacon or sausage (contains wheat)
soft fruit. I messed up and mada a fruit salad that made a blockage so be careful with your fruits and use a blender for smoothie fun. i love and tolerate perfectly, ripe cantalope, honeydew, bananas and very ripe pears.
apples are too fibrous to break down and move thru and the skin is worthless. I bake apple slices with cinnamon and nutmeg and add it to my oatmeal or some form of sweet squash.
squash is so fun. there are so many varieties and is so smooshy and tasty
chicken breast and turkey breast and fish. all good if not fried. no friedness and no fat. no more toilet oil spills!
brown rice: make it by the bucketful and use it all week.
make everything in bulk.
i am not sure about potatoes i will give them one more chance to agree with me than its gonna be occasional consumption only.
just start with some basic smooshy food that you know is agreeable with you, like rice or squash and gradually try more foods and record your results, especially if you find your symptoms return.
i want you to look down grocery aisles and say to yourselves:THERE IS NOT ONE THING I CAN EAT HERE (thats in a package with chemicals you cant pronounce)
people werent meant to eat this way by rule of nature in the first place, and i know we suffer cd symptoms as a result of our habits.
quit smoking, quit alcohol, quit caffeine, except i consume alot of green and herbal teas. exercise, go skateboarding or whatever,
my energy is way way up without caffeine, my guts feel much better, but im not better and never will be perfect. i have bms that are formed shapes now for the first time in 19 years(not consistently, but i havent even been doing this for just over a month!). ill go numba2 twice a day at best,
there are ways beyond what your dr tells you is best for you. it is very difficult to maintain this diet but i am because i dont want to have the physical pain as often as i did. and now, i dont. and im on 5mg of pred now, still no relapse, which was the norm for 2 years. get low mgs of pred, then flare and boost the mgs right back up.
sometimes i think my doctor wants me to be sick. hi looked like he was gonna cry when i told him how great i have been feeling.

anyone ever want to find me on the m-space, its myspace.com/todd8778

On the apple skins, potential Crohn's inflammatory responses notwithstanding, the skin is where most of the nutrients actually are, so worthless isn't quite appropriate, but for Crohns, omission is probably a good idea, if that's what you meant.

You picked the wrong doctor if he appeared to be on the verge of crying on good news of you feeling better.

My gf challenges me with the biggest chemical names she can find. I can pronounce 'em. Just saying.....:)

Btw, have you met Hippie4lyfe here?

Glad you found a diet that works.

Just one question. Brown rice: isn't it high on fiber and residue and may cause blockage if you have narrowing?

I'm not being flippant, but that seems like an extreme diet.
I enjoy my food, coffee and alcohol (I'm Irish). if I was to give up everything that I enjoy, which is everything on your list, I think I would give up hope.

Like I said, I'm not being flippant and I respect your beliefs, but I'm sticking to my chosen lifestyle.

Isn't stout part of Irish medicine anyway? ;)

my cd puts me in too much pain to mess with alcohol and food i "love". see you stop loving it when your life becomes unliveable. i have been a dedicated skateboarder for 17 years and thats what im not trying to give up.
i dont even like bein drunk.
everyone has different priorities man, and if boozin it and fast food are yours then more power to ya.
i also choose this diet for ethical reasons as well.

mazen,,, im not free of narrowing at all. havent had trouble with the rice yet. have a small annoying flare right now anyways....spaghetti squash did it. i might try and re cook it cus it was huge and i dont want to throw it out. but as i ate it it has a crunchiness like other fruits and veggies i cant have.
i also had an obstruction the other day that subsided almost immediately after drinking kombucha tea. that stuff is amazing. i want to learn how to make it...

I'm not on SCD, but I read on an SCD diet site that spaghetti squash shouldn't be eaten if you have narrowing; I avoided all the below through instinct even before reading the post.

The foods that may aggravate people with narrowed ileums (strictures) are
raw grapes, a lot of raisins, spaghetti squash, peels of veggies and fruits,
nuts eaten whole even when chewed well (nut flour in baking seems to be
fine).

What fruits and veggies you can tolerate? Raw or cooked? I'm trying asimilar diet as yours. I also don't smoke or drink, but I never did that in all my life. It was funny when I first was diagnosed with Crohn's, my doctor said you should stop smoking and alcohol immediately :); I guess that didn't cahnge anything for me :)

What is kombucha tea???

I am on an extreme diet too, I even eliminated all meats over 12 years ago at the recommendation of my GI b/c I was having so much trouble digesting it. Basically, I don't have caffine, alcohol, meat, anything too fatty, greasy or acidic. There are certain foods I miss, but if I try them I get so horribly sick that I've actually stopped liking a lot of that stuff. The diet has helped me tremendously, but it's not for everyone. My bro, who also has Crohn's, is sick regardless of what he eats, thus the elimination diet didn't work for him (although, there are some foods he always avoids).

When I was pregnant with my daughter (9 years ago), I had constant cravings for fruit. I ate cereal, oatmeal or corn muffins for breakfast and then a fruit salad for lunch and sometimes even again at dinner. If I didn't have fruit salad for dinner I would have green salad with grilled chicken. Again, for some reason I constantly craved fruits (mostly melons and peaches...???). Those 9 months, coupled with the awesome prenatal vitamins I was taking were the healthiest and greatest months of my life. No gastro pains, no d, no c, and energy that lasted all day long and I slept WONDERFULLY! After my daughter was born, I went back to my usual eatting habits (mostly because my cravings disappeared). No more vitamins, no more fruits and back to having the same terrible issues that I had before I got pregnant. Instead, I take 4 Lialda pills a day and I'm on a 6-MP drug as well. In my mind there is much that can be said about a healthy diet, even if I don't practice what I preach.

Hi everyone, I've got a couple questions for you all about diet.
I'm newly diagnosed, so I'm trying to figure a lot out here.

1. Did any of your doctors recommend a certain diet?

A lot of websites say no diet has been proven effective against crohn's,
but I've read how many of you have found gluten-free and other diets
to be beneficial.

2. I'm wondering if it's different for everyone or if there's one certain
thing that really works that doctors aren't telling us?

My doctor hasn't discussed anything with me yet, as I just got the diagnosis
yesterday, just want to know what everyone here thinks.

Thanks!

My doctor never mentioned anything about food to me, then again I don't think he is a fantastic doctor either.

What you have read is true, there is no one diet or no one food that will help for all. There are some main foods you should stay away from - nuts, corn, popcorn, basically anything that comes out undigested. I am in remission and still cannot eat these items and as far as I know most can't either.

Some people on here cannot eat raw veggies but can eat them cooked, others are opposites. Some, bananas actually help them others it hurts them. You just have to find out what works best for you. For me - I eat a lot of long grain rice, potatoes, and chicken. For others this might be a recipe for disaster!
