Hi there, has anyone here had experience with using Diflucan to control intestinal yeast? My doctor found evidence of a yeast infection in blood work and stool sample and prescribed 6 weeks of diflucan. I have been having a lot of D over the last 3.5 years but now with the Diflucan the D is gone. I'm having firm BM's regularly now. Has anyone else had this experience?

hey ryan!
yup i was on diflucan, but it was more of just a "just in case" incident.

i have always had a little thrush on my tounge and sore throat and my GI wanted to check and make sure that i didnt have a full blown candida infection before i had an endoscopy a few months ago. so my case was totally different than yours, sorry!
didnt even notice a change in my bowel habits while opn it, but then again, im always all across the board.

if you are having issues with yeast though, do you know about yeast free diets? there are certain foods that feed yeast and allow it to grow in abundance, so if you dont eat them then youll actually starve the yeast and it will go away eventually.
let me know if you want me to explain more....

I've been on Diflucan several times for yeast infections. I get them every time I have to be on an antibiotic. I've never been on it for 6 weeks though! The most I've taken is 3 -- 1 every other day. Some of my YI's are very stubborn. Over the counter stuff doesn't work most of the time. I once had a YI for about a year. This came after being on a long course of IV and oral Flagyl. I'd get an OTC treatment and a week later it would be back. I'd take a Diflucan and a couple weeks later it would be back. Finally the doc put me on one every other day (3 pills total) and it FINALLY went away. Talk about relief! I wasn't diagnosed at the time and constipation/firm/hard stools were the norm for me, so I don't know if the meds made it worse or not.

Hi Ryan. What blood test did the doctor order to identify yeast infections? also how is the SCD going. I just started 10 days ago and feel better already. I also read that when starting SCD, yeast infections may increase due to a decrease in bacteria; check below:

http://pecanbread.com/new/yeast.html

"We do occasionally see yeast flare ups when starting SCD. This should be a temporary increase. As lots of pathogenic bacteria are the first to die off by not feeding them with starches and sugars, yeast will attempt to take up that empty space initially. By giving either powerful homemade SCD yogurt or excellent probiotics, one can *usually* avoid this situation.
For those with yeast overgrowth... "It is wise to cut back on honey ingestion at the beginning of the dietary regimen (amount of honey in recipes should be decreased by at least 75%). The amount of honey may be increased as the condition improves." (quote taken from BTVC)

We have found that using some form of probiotic is also helpful. Probiotics can take the form of yogurt (made from goat, cow or nut milk), other fermented foods (such as HOMEMADE sauerkraut or kimchi) or probiotic powder or capsules (in case the child is not yet ready for any yogurts).

Ensuring that all vegetables and fruits foods are peeled and cooked at the beginning is also helpful in controlling yeast overgrowth. Undigested foods can feed microbes and delay healing.

The use of anti-fungals may be necessary. Some natural anti-fungals include: homemade carrot juice and garlic, oil of oregano, grapefruit seed extract (GSE) with or without enzymes. Some decide to go with prescription anti-fungals such as Nystatin. If using both a probiotic (or yogurt) and an anti-fungal, be sure to give them at separate times in order to preserve the live beneficial bacteria."

Thanks for the info kello and AIjen.
The blood test was actually part of a nutritional analysis from Genova Diagnostics.
SCD has been going ok. I have noticed quite a difference in crohn's symptoms, but I also am extremely limited in my diet. I'm stuck at stage1/2 on pecanbread and have been for probably 6 months. It may be that the yeast was also creating problems that preventing me from progressing on SCD, so I'm hoping that once the diflucan ends I don't have a big regression. I've added some new foods recently while on the diflucan and it seems fine. In fact my GI system is very very good right now - almost normal. the only problem I'm getting is that I get a fair bit of bloating - more than ever before. I've read that it can be a side effect of diflucan. My big hope is that the yeast was a major factor in my colitis and that teh diflucan will eliminate that issue so that I can progress to the full SCD.
