Hi everyone,

I'm considering applying for disability in Ontario, I've been sick for a while and it looks like I'm going to be sick for a long time.

Has anyone tried to apply for long term benefits in Canada? If so how did it go?

Anyone know if a university student who gets OSAP would be considered?

thanks guys :)

Sam

I was going to reply yesterday but was heading to bed as you posted. I'm not sure how that would go over if you got a disability income while going to school and collecting OSAP because I would think the government would look at it like A. you have a source of income and B. you're "okay" enough to go to school...in their eyes.

However, I am a student and this is my experience. I don't collect disability, but I do have a doctors note for school/OSAP which in return OSAP gives me more money to help out with school as an incentive for going to school despite having crohns. You DO NOT have to pay this portion back as it is a grant.

Another thing I do, because of a doctors note, I file for the Disability Tax Credit when doing my income tax every year. It is a form that you have to fill out and have your doctor sign it as well, then send it to the Canada Revenue Agency for assessment. If you do get accepted (Crohn's is an acceptable disability for this) and then when doing your income tax you get quite a nice return. I won't give exact details but last year my return was over a couple thousand dollars. I know you only get it once a year, but the lump sum can really make a difference or you could just put it aside yourself.

The purpose of this is to help offset the cost of medical expenses, work lost while sick, etc. It makes quite a difference when I do my income tax. You should definitely look into this.

no problem! I still work/go to school so you don't have to be physically held back because of crohns, so anyone with crohns/colitis SHOULD be able to get it.. If you're doctor won't sign it for you for whatever reason I know most clinics will sign "DTC" notes. My last doctor wouldn't because he doesn't feel crohns is serious enough for it anymore, but my new doctor had no problem with it.
