I got diagnosed last September, I graduated in may 09 and have been out of work since then.

I was thinking of applying for disability benefits just to get some sort of financial support since I'm pretty much mooching off my parents at the moment and I hate being a burden.

I was wondering how it would affect potentially getting a job later and if anyone has received any sort of benefits from the canadian gov't before.

Also there's an organization here that helps you get approved for benefits (national benefit authority) but obviously they take a cut if you get approved for the benefits, anyone have any experience with that?

I'm mostly worried about having some sort of permanent mark on my background records that would turn off potential future employers down the line, but truthfully I dont know how any of this works. Help please :)

I receive CPP (Canada Pension Plan) Disability benefits. You can go to the Services Canada website and it gives you all the info. You can access the application and information at: http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/isp/cpp/disaben.shtml

There is a part that you will fill out and a portion that your doctor has to fill out. It takes about six weeks for your application to be processed after they receive your completed application and for you to find out if you've been denied or accepted for CPP.

CPP encourages people to return to work when you're able. Once you find a job, you have to inform them and they will stop payment on your CPP benefits. If you find that, after a few months of working, you get sick, the CPP benefits will just start right back up again (I worked for eight months before I got really sick again, and my benefits resumed right away).

You may be also eligible to receive medical benefits through provincial welfare programs. I think it's called the Ontario Disability Support Program through the Ministry of Community and Social Services.

Most employers won't know that you receive either of these benefits unless you choose to disclose this information to them.
