Do all treatments cause hair loss?

I'm currently a 24 year old male on 50mg of 6mp and I have lost a lot of hair. I'm hoping there are other treatments that don't cause hair loss however, I know that everybody reacts differently to medications.

Basically, I'm looking for a Crohn's treatment that has the least side effects of hair loss or non at all. Anybody know or have advice on a treatment that does not cause hair loss?

Hi Gman,

The first thing that comes to mind is enteral nutrition. Please see our enteral nutrition forum for more information. But as you mention, everyone reacts different. You might lose hair on 6mp but not a single strand on a Humira.

As David says every drug affects different people in different ways. Aza makes some people lose their hair- with me it has made it thicker and grow quicker ...even my hairdresser has commented on it!
If you have upper GI /small bowel crohn's enteral nutrition can help induce remission...though often symptoms recur when it is stopped unless on another maintenance med.

When I was on 6-mp I had no issue with hair loss.....not sure if it makes a difference between male and female though.....

My son is on Imuran, the parent drug to 6mp. He did have hair loss and his hair also changed colour whilst in the earlier days of using it. I do have some suspicion though that although Imuran may have played a part in this, due to other peoples experiences, I also wonder how much of it was due to his malabsorption, weight loss and generally poor condition overall. Now that he is in remission his hair is back to its normal colour and thicker than ever.

I think it's a combo of the drugs themselves, the tremendous stressyour body undergoes from a flare, anemia, and the malabsorption of vitamins in genral all contribute to this.

I started losing my hair after I got diagnosed with Crohns and my doctor told me it was not from the medication but from being sick in general and not absorbing nutrients correctly. Now that I have been in remission for a few months, I'm still on Imuran and the hair loss has gone back to basic shedding. So in my case, it wasn't so much about the medication but from the disease.
