Hello,

There's a tiny tiny chance that my husband and I might move to China for a year to teach English. Some other countries are on the list of possibiilties, too. A lot of the reason it's a tiny tiny chance is that we don't know what to expect for healthcare abroad.

Does anyone know anything about seeing doctors abroad? What about specifically in China? What if I want to get a prescription for Pentasa over there? Or would I just have to see if my GI here can get me a year prescription in advance?

Any help/info greatly appreciated!

Look into this prior to getting there. I don't know what part of China you are venturing to, but I know when I was quite ill over there and had to go, it was fine. I found some U.S. docs there. With internet, you should be able to search out docs in the area.

If you can get advance prescriptions, do so. Get anything else you think you will need. However, do not eliminate the possibility of eastern meds. I found them extremely helpful and did not give you the side effects you can get from western meds. The trip will be a wonderful opportunity to try eastern medicine and see how your body responds to it.

Good luck!

Thanks Mickey! Although I'd love to go somewhere very remote, the chances of us doing that are, well, very remote! We'll probably stick to a major city like Beijing. I'll search ahead. Glad to know you found some US docs there! I guess my main concern is the language barrier. I know a bit of conversational Chinese, but nothing medical.

Re: eastern medicine. Did you do acupuncture there? Herbs? What kinds of treatments did you do?

A while ago when I was first diagnosed I tried Chinese herbs (went to Chinatown in NYC to meet a doc there), but they didn't do much because my intestines had already scarred shut...

But I'm very interested in acupuncture and other types of treatment!

I had near pneumonia when was there and was given eastern meds (rabbit feces looking pills) and was night and day difference by next day; no side effects! I also had a business associate have her back go out and we found an acupuncture doc there who got my associate up and going in no time. I have tried numerous eastern meds and never was disappointed. The key is to know, in advance, what doc you will use and then a hospital that also is to the caliber you want. You can probably search online and find them easier, than my 20 years ago visits. I am sure it is much better quality than before!

Keep your mind open and you can get some great relief/cures with Eastern meds. Amazing they can check your pulse and know what is wrong and exactly where in your body! It is a wonderful eye-opening experience! Enjoy!
