I just had a hysterectomy and was given blood thinners during surgery. They say I was at risk for a DVT and I guess IBD sufferers are too. Just wondering if anyone every had one and what they symptoms were?

I had them in both legs in June, it was very painful. Pain was the only real symptom. My legs started feeling stiff one night and I woke up the next morning and I could barely walk. I went to the hospital they sent me home with painkillers and told me to come back if it got worse or didn't go away. I had them for a week and my feet started to swell, then they properly diagnosed them. But mine were in the calves and in both legs, which is very rare. They gave me 3 months of heparin injections, because people with UC can't take coumadin.

Yes I worry about it! Not only do I have Crohn's, but I smoke occasionally and take a contraceptive pill. When I went on holiday, I actually did those exercises from the in flight magazine! I also struggle to drink enough fluids (which increases the risk).

The thought crosses my mind about once a week. I've been an avid smoker for over a decade, been on contraceptive pills for the same amount of time, and my family has a history of blood clots on both sides. When I'm on the toilet for longer than 10 mins, my legs fall asleep. Same thing if my cat leans on my legs. I also don't get enough exercise, as I'm too busy working and resting.

I have had a DVT followed by bilateral PE. The PE almost killed me so yes I do worry about them. The danger of DVT is that they can travel to the lungs, heart or brain.

My symptoms of my DVT was extreme pain, swelling and my calf felt hot. My symptoms for the PE was shortness of breath (felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest), chest pain, lightheaded and I felt flush/hot.

These are serious medical conditions so if you think you have a DVT or PE seek immediate medical care.
