Am I going thru "the change" or are the steroids making my internal thermometer out of whack?

The past four weeks I have been totally overheated - night sweats while sleeping, during the day, periods of being just completely overheated.

I don't think it's "hot flashes" because I am not breaking out into a sweat, but I seriously feel like I could shed my clothes at work and still be too warm. My co-workers are still running their space heaters and I am in a tank top!

Does anyone else on pred have this issue? I am at 12 mg right now and coming down 1 mg a week.

Help! - Amy

Haha...poor Amy! That sounds awful. I haven't been on Pred, so I have no idea, and I never experienced that with Entocort. Hopefully others will have some input.

It is funny how people are still running their heaters though. My husband told me yesterday he was sweating at work because they still had the heat running through the main system.

I know! I've been avoiding it like the plague. Though I'm still a newbie to Crohn's. I still have plenty of time, I guess.

When I was in the hospital w/ the obstruction they said I should be on Pred or Entocort and I said I'd rather go with the Entocort since it worked last time. Seems to still be working well. Though I just decreased to 3 mg today since I finally started the Imuran. Hopefully I continue to do alright since I know the aza can take a while!

HAHA Amy... I have this mental visual of you with your central air on full blast with enormous ice blocks beside you with penguins waddling around your house and you sitting there still sweating buckets hehe..
Hope you can find some relief..

Can sympathise with you there Amy, I have been having hot flushes too, but it had better not be the change because I'm only 25! I put it down to the pred since I'm tapering, and it was definately worse a few weeks ago (on 15mg at the moment). But the last few days have been really hot here in England, so I'm all hot and bothered anyway now.

I can recall feeling overheated when I was on Pred. Back when I was a child on high doses of it I actually collapsed from being overheated on the playground.

Perhaps you should check your temperature as well. I mean you wouldn't have a fever for 4 weeks but I did go to the doctor for something unrelated to my feeling hot (to talk about a medication change I think) and they said I had a bad fever and I had no idea that I was even sick. I thought it was just really warm those days.

Poor you!!
no, I didn't get overheated on Pred, so I would visit the doc, just to be on the safe side, you might just have a virus or fever, paracetamol will bring your temp down.
lotsa luv
xxx

I never had hot flashes per say but I know I was always warm. Normally, I am always cold, but while I was on pred, I was always hot. People at work were even commenting on the change because I kept saying we should make it cooler.

I had terrible "hot flashes" while on Pred. Day, night, and everything in between. Once I tapered off, the heat intolerance went away. Hope it gets better for you. I know how unbearable it can be.

Hey Amy, I hope it's just pred-related.... Had you noticed being overheated at higher doses?? I noticed being really hot on prednisone, but it was when I was on 60mg down to 20mg, and then things sort of 'stabilized'.

Its prednisone related all right! That is the one symptom of prednisone that has caused me the most aggravation and started immediately when I began prednisone. I've been on prednisone for 1.5 years now, I've been at 6mg/day for the past 5 months or so (steroid dependent now). Even though I can run 10km with no problem, exercise every day and am in great physical shape, I start to overheat after only 6 or 7 minutes of jogging or light exercise. My head starts to turn red, I get hot, and I sweat like crazy. Within 20 minutes my clothes are soaked.

It wouldn't be such a problem for me except that I am involved in sports and it probably looks like I'm out of shape and about to drop dead to anyone who sees me. I'm constantly towelling off. I just started taking 6MP to get off this prednisone, but I won't be off prednisone for at least another 4 months. I'm really, really hoping that I stop sweating/overheating when the prednisone ends!

BTW: I don't have night sweats, although I did at first when I was on the really high doses of prednisone. And I don't sweat when I'm just walking around in room temperature. Its only when I start to exercise that my internal temperature regulation goes out of control. I lose at least a pound of water every time I work out.

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

It's gotten worse as I have tapered down, but it's also getting warmer here in PA and warmer in the office at work.

There's a restaurant downstairs from my office. Maybe I can stick my head in the cooler in their kitchen!
