Doomsday Treatment options

I have devoted much of my time to learning about Crohn's disease, most likely because the treatments make me a paranoid insomniac. So I have researched everything from treatment, to Crohn's in ancient times and read all I can about it.

Now this is ONLY if it was a doomsday, life or death, war torn country type situation. Where you cannot get into a doctor, and have no other options. I hope there is a cure for Crohn's before this happens but until then its best to at least think about.

So firstly everyone should have a great GI who they see regularly to manage their disease. If you do, and you understand what treatments work, as well as what food and lifestyle choices make a difference then you can think about some options.

The first one is to discuss this with your GI, as I have. Now of course for legal reasons he could not just give me extra treatment for a rainy day so it was up to me to look into options.

I thought about just saving some of the prednisone, and antibiotics but I follow the doctors instructions on how much to take when I do flare. Some people can "Stock up" but chances are that means tapering down or cutting treatment short which is highly unrecommended.

For me and I know some others antibiotics help out a ton when they are flaring. Then for others its the worse treatment possible. So your mileage may vary and if antibiotics don't help then reading on might be useless for you.

Now I did some research on people who are the extremist survival type to figure out an alternate way of getting antibiotics. Then it all lead me to fish antibiotics. When I first read about it I was skeptical, and nothing about it seemed like a safe option. But in a life or death situation you have to do what you can.

I then looked further into it, finding fish antibiotics require no prescription. That's because the FDA do not regulate them, they are not under the same standards for human consumption. That means they could have fillers, be made in unsanitary conditions, and even be expired antibiotics. Again none of it sounds safe, but I dug deeper.

I found a place in the united states that make these fish antibiotics called Thomas Labs. I then ordered some of the fish-zole (lol) to see if it was simply fish food or what the heck it was. At the time of doing this I was also on Metronidazole 500mg daily. So I bought the same 500mg but with the fish label. Once I received it in the mail I popped the bottle open to see if it was fish fodder.

To my surprise, they were the exact same shape, size, and color as my prescribed metronidazole. Right down to the marking on the pill, everything appeared to be the same. The only difference was the bottle, and the label saying for use in fish only. So could they be different pills, from one company to another that looked the same. Sure, they could also not be the same pill but look the same. I cannot test the chemical make up of them so who knows?

Now I read that the other fish-antibiotics had the same things as their human counterpart. So I brought it up to my GI and at first he seemed a little surprised, I even showed him the bottle and the two pills. Of course he advised against taking any of the fish stuff and I have not. But if I had no other options and it was life or death survival, I do believe it would be an option.

So yeah that's just my thought on a doomsday treatment but maybe there are smarter alternatives?

Hi and welcome.

I'd be concerned with what is actually in the fish antibiotics. Pill identification markings are required by the FDA and needs to be unique to the drug.

Yup unfortunately that is very true. Also true about most things these days, walking into a fast food joint or grocery store has similar risks. I will never know whats in my fish-zole lol and hope to never have to find out.

Thanks for the welcome, I have read these forums often in times of flare ups and have received more info here than anyplace else. Its an excellent community for these unfortunate diseases.

Hello, Sid.

"Doomsday?" Should doomsday happen, IBD and it's treatment will be the least of our worries.

Regards,
Miles
