I am writing this for my father who is 82 years old. He is a quite active person but now unable to take food. I am here because I feel that this is the group that has the most experience with parenteral nutrition.
My father received Parenteral nutrition for the first time yesterday. He received KABIVEN-PERIPHERAL emulsion of 1440 ml over 12 hours. He is receiving it through a PICC line. After the infusion he felt severely bloated and felt discomfort all over his abdomen and back. He could not sleep at all. After some hot bag fomentation, the discomfort subsided. Bloating subsided about 6 hours later. Could this be due to the parenteral nutrition? Does the speed of infusion have anything to do with it? (Because, the nurse speeded up the infusion towards the end because "the infusion must finish in 12 hours")
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance
