A started Elavil 3 nights ago. For the first 5 nights she takes 1/2 tablet, then on the 6th night she can take the full dose.

I really want to know what others have experienced with this medication. How long until you saw results? If you didn't see results when did you stop the medication? Is it something that needs to be weaned?

DS tried elavil for a little over a month .
Then we stopped.
He was having an elevated heart rate with exercise ( heart beating very hard as well).
Allergist had concerns about this combined with his albuterol for asthma.
There is a drug contraindications .
In the end after a month it was decided it did not help DS.

My older daughter was on it for joint pain and she saw results within a week. She only took it at night and it helped her sleep through the night both by making her sleepy and by decreasing the pain. She's doing well now on Humira and mtx and doesn't need it anymore but she said she would go back on it if she needed it.

DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tricyclic antidepressants [for example, amitriptyline (Elavil, Endep), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (for example, tranylcypromine) should not be combined with albuterol because of their additive effects on the vascular system (increased blood pressure, heart rate, etc.). A period of two weeks should elapse between treatment with albuterol and tricyclic antidepressants or monoamine oxidase inhibitors

Giving the full dose tonight. No side effects so far but no results either. I'm assuming it will take at least a week at the full dose to make a difference. I think at the one month mark I'll make a decision about its effectiveness. Fingers still crossed!

Hi Dancemom. My son is taking elavil. 25mg along with gabapentin and celebrex for pain. It took about a month and half to see improvement, He is doing a lot better. He is showing some side effects but I am not sure if they are from elavil or gabapentin. We will address those at next appointment. I do know that we are not supposed to withdraw abruptly from it. We have to tapered down. I hope it works for your kid.

We tried a similar med (desipramine) but couldn't continue due to lowering her seizure threshhold - mini-seizures.
