My 13 year old grandson has growth problems caused by IBD. He is on medication for it. We just ordered an elemental nutrition from Neocate called E028 Splash to help increase his growth and weight.
It looks like a fruit drink. Its 80% water and includes a lot of sugar, the rest of the ingredients sound like a chemical factory.
Since it is an elemental nutrition it can be digested easier, and hopefully it will help him. But the ingredients scare me a little.
Could it be harmful?

The elemental formula is broken down so the body doesn't have to work much at all.
It doesn't have allergenic proteins to cause any reactions
Children and adults use it as sole nutrition for years and grow very healthy.
It does not hAve a lot of sugar . TPN is similar your body needs a sugar, a fat and an oil period even in an iv drip.

It also needs water .

My son has used an elemental formula for over two years now. It has done him only good! :) I don't think I've ever heard of a 'bad' response to these formulas.

My daughter has been living mostly on elemental formulas since February and she has grown and thrived better than she has almost her entire life. I think there are some less than desirable things in some of the formulas, but there has been no proof that the form that they are in are harmful, and they really do a lot of good. Is your grandson going to drink it or use an NG tube? Many of the formulas are hard to drink due to less than palatable taste, etc...

My daughter wasn't on elemental but worse Boost and Ensure. I am a bit of a nutrition nut so you can just imagine my head exploding when I read the list of ingredients. But then I figured the doc would not recommend this exclusively if there was known and certain harm. My daughter did phenominally well on her EEN with Boost and Ensure. So much so that we clung to it as a supplement after reintroducing food.

Same as all the drugs...rewards outweigh risk and in the case of formula little to no risk.

Hope it helps him!
