I've been under the care of a hematologist for a couple years because of my higher than normal IMG. I'm in a flare and all my doctors know about this. I was sent for a bone marrow biopsy Monday and a CT Scan at the end of the month. They are concerned about a possible bone marrow cancer.

Has anyone else experienced an elevated IMG during a flare?

Thanks in advance.

I have, and also have a protein in my blood that is found in Multiple Myeloma. I see a hematologist who follows my levels, which have basically stayed the same over the past 3 years. It was a scary thing, at the beginning, especially having to have the bone marrow! At this point, I am considered to just have MGUS, which means my blood has the characteristics that could become Multiple Myeloma, BUT at this low elevated level that is not changing, it is NOT a cancer. Since my numbers have stayed the same, my hematologist believes that the elevation is probably caused by inflammation due to my mixed connective tissue disease. (lupus, RA, etc.) So... maybe yours is increased because of a Crohn's flare, which is also an autoimmune disease. (That is my hope!)

I hope that this is not too confusing. All I know, is that it is a very good thing that you had the bone marrow test and are having a CT. From my experience, hematologists are VERY smart and thorough! (My hematologist has actually told me a few times that he has an easy job, and that the autoimmune doctors, such as my rheumatologist, has a very hard job, because their diseases are not as clear cut as cancer.... Go figure.)

I am hoping that your elevated IMG is a due to a Crohn's flare, and not a cancer of the blood or bone marrow. Please let me know! I am sending good thoughts, best wishes, hugs, and prayers!

Thanks everyone. Hematologist isnt to concerned. Better safe than sorry.

I have been followed on an annual basis
by an oncology hematologist for the last seven years for
Mgus lambda and now my Family doctor will be doing tests at intervals and relating to the oncology hematologist which saves additional treks to the cancer clinic
My last M protein level had increased to 50g/litre which could besuggestive of smouldering
Myeloma ,the gammaglobulin was 15 and IGg 19

No bone marrow has been done as yet and I hope to escape that since I am so far asymptomatic.
Latest results have yet to be further discussed early February and since the docs are not
Freaking out neither am I
It's bad enough with all the other crohns issues without any additions to complicate things

They were originally concerned about multiple myeloma. Bone marrow biopsy was rechecked by an oncology pathologist (?) and was clear. They now follow me annually.

Yes---multiple myeloma is the major concern especially when values change as mine have
from M protein level of 2.5 to 5g/DCL
Its good when there are no other symptoms as is the case for me.
They still need to follow it regularly so as to be on top of it and take any necessary action
If other symptoms occur
Such is life

The oncology hematologist is the doc who does the bone marrow procedure
and sends it to the laboratory for processing by medical laboratory scientists followed by
Analysis and diagnosis by the pathologist who is also a
highly qualified doctor..
