Hi Heartofwisdom,
Uhh.... yeah, Kello is right - I had an enteroclytitis done three weeks ago. I'm sorry to say I can't be all that reassurring about it either, Heart. My experience of it was pretty grim...
It does actually involve a naso-gastric tube Pen.... although with me, they ended up putting a tube down via my PEG after they tried the N/G tube and I just about choked to death on them. The N/G goes down your nose and throat, into your stomach and then into the duodenum and has to go past a bend to reach your small bowel. They use the tube to inject two different sorts of contrast - barium and methylcellulose - into your bowel and then chart the process on screen.
I am not very good with N/G tubes, but that is partly cos I have a deviated septum (funny nose) and chronic sinusitis. However, the key is to TRY to relax as much as possible. (((HUGS))) The first part is by far the worst. Ask if you can swallow a bit of water through a straw - that can help the tube go down and get past the gag reflex.
I was told that they don't like to sedate you because they need you to change position as they chart the progress of the contrast.
Sorry I cant say it's not that bad... but like all unpleasant tests it doesnt last forever hun. It will be over and done with soon enough.
I am actually facing a repeat of this test when I go on vacation - the city where my sister lives has better facilities and can do an MRI enteroclytitis of my small bowel so I am getting that done. I wasn't too happy to hear the 'enteroclytitis' bit
in the title!
I'll be thinking of you tomorrow..... if you start to panic, squeeze my hand and remind yourself that Cookie survived and so will you, OK? ((HUGS))) again....
