Entocort

Yes. Another steroid. Made me fat, like prednisone but did not have the other properties of thinning out bones I am told. I was told NOT to have children, ever, after having taken this drug. That was not a problem for me.

Entocort was a great med for me, but it works in a specific area of your bowel. Howerver, beware of long-term/high-dose use. It is a topical steroid so absorption beyond the liver is supposed to be limited. I however had great response and was in what I call semi-remission for 15 years (i.e. very few symptoms). I was using a higher than recommended dosage for 15 years which is longer than recommended by far.. Finally, my new gastro guy said STOP. I've got bone loss and thinning of skin. He was also concerned about my adrenal gland. I am presently weaning off of the drug with no major crohn's symptoms. I do now have leg and hip problems that my doc thinks was being masked by the steroid. It could also be that I'm climbing in rafters and turning 65.

I am on it again (I was on it earlier this year). It is a steroid, but I find that the side effects are a lot less severe than predisone. But I also find it takes longer to work than predisone. And like predisone, you really shouldn't be on it long term.

I love Entocort. I hoped my GI would keep it as a long term med but it is just a short term treatment. Still, I had nothing but a positive experience, I could literally feel my stricture allowing food through after taking it. I did not get any moonface etc, because it is not a systemic steroid. Overall I think it is my favorite. I am on Humira now but still have a stash of Entocort for if anything gets really bad.
