Hi All

I'm a newbie here, unfortunately not a newbie to Crohns Disease!
I've got my next colonoscopy in a few weeks and I've been offered entonox (gas and air) instead of sedation for the first time. Sedation isn't great on me and doesn't work too well and I had gas and air for labour (but that was a while ago).

Has anyone had a colonoscopy with entonox and was it bearable?
Currently only have mild symptoms, but no idea about inflammation levels - currently not on any meds.

Thanks everyone in advance

I have never heard of it for colonoscopy. I have used nitrous oxide ( laughing gas) for dental procedures and it worked pretty well in getting me relaxed. Would you be getting just that it that plus pain killers?

That can be an option in the UK so I am familiar with it.

My first colonoscopy I had just gas and air (my choice) and it was certainly bearable.

My second c scope I opted for all the drugs plus asked for, and was given, gas and air halfway through, ended up getting double doses of everything, and it was really tough.

Still no idea why the second was worse, both were visually normal and nothing on biopsy (I am undiagnosed) especially as my prep was much milder for that one.

Hi!

I have only had one colonoscopy and I was offered gas and air for it. I was concerned that it wouldn't work because it hadn't helped when I was in labour, so they said that they could add sedation if it was necessary during the procedure.

It worked a treat to start with and I just remember being rather giggly and talkative, but I did want to be sick at one point because I overdosed on it! It was helpful for the staff to be able to ask me to move around side to side in order to help the scope through.

Eventually the scope reached a really difficult bit near my hepatic flexture and it became too painful too bear. No problem, they just wacked in a bit of Midazolam and I knew nothing else until I woke up afterwards.

The practitioner said she had never had such a long and twisty bowel to have to navigate around!

I would go for the same option again next time, as long as I can have the same reassurance that sedation will be there if I need it.

Good luck!
