I'm wanting to know if anybody has experienced excruciating pain in the neck and shoulder area? Mine started about a month ago very light, would go away after walking around for a few minutes and now it is so bad, I cannot sleep, work or do anything. It is constant. Nothing I do stops the pain at all. I have never experienced any type of pain like this in my life. I cannot express enough how excruciating it is. I get normal adjustments at the chiropractor, but the adjustments do not touch this pain at all. My chiropractor tells me he has no idea what it is which does not make sense to me since he took xrays. He suggests maybe arthritis? How could arthritis be this debilitating? I just don't see how arthritis could cause this much pain, but like I said he is just guessing. I have dealt with a lot of different pain in my life being that I have crohns,, but never anything this painful. It gets much worse when I lay down too. Please anybody that is dealing with this, give me your thoughts. I don't think I would have meningitis. I am desperate for some answers. I have no idea what to do and no insurance.

I agree with Ron. If you can get your GP to have a look and maybe get you a referral to a rheumatologist if necessary, it could be helpful. Since you have no coverage it may be problematic.

You could also using try a foam roller, I have one I got from amazon for about 10-15 bucks. It is kind of like a massage, there are lots of videos on how to use them online. Maybe a heating pad or some epsom salt baths would help a little too. Next time you go to the chiropractor ask about magnesium bisglycinate supplements as well. It can help if the problem is muscular in nature. I have also been known to use methocarbamol tablets(muscle relaxant)they are usually OTC, although you may need to ask the pharmacist. These are some of the things that I have done that helped upper back and neck pain. I hope you find some relief.

Arthritis can cause severe pain
Ds has juvenile spondyloarthritis which when not under control can cause severe pain in his lower back
Neck
Shoulders
Hands
Wrist
Knees
Hips and heels

A rheumo who is familiar with SpA would be needed
Folks with SpA need to steer clear of a chiropractor

Arthritis can definitely be debilitating. You should see a rheumatologist.

With spondyloarthritis, symptoms include morning stiffness and pain that gets better with movement and worse with rest. You could see redness or swelling in a joint. The spine is often involved, including the neck.

Until you know if you have SpA, I would stay away from a chiropractor. Both my daughters and my husband have it and every doctor we have ever seen has told us to stay away from chiropractors - with SpA, they can do more harm than good.

Heat and ice might help a little while you are waiting to get an appt.

I've often had shoulder and neck pain recently. I bought an orthopedic pillow and that helped quite a bit as did stretching.

I wouldn't have described it as excruciating though. If it's that bad then you should see someone.

Was this sudden onset or did it slowly get worse over a long period of time? If it came on suddenly, like all in one day, I'd suspect a pinched nerve and/or a herniated disc in your spine. If it slowly got worse I'd suspect possibly arthritis. Either way I'd consult an orthopedist or rheumatologist.

Thanks for the information and the link. I'm going to definitely check that out. I just didn't know that arthritis could cause that much pain since I have never been diagnosed with it.

I never even thought of an orthopedic pillow. Thanks for the reply:>)

It came on slowly. I kept thinking it was my neck out of adjustment since I had whiplash back in 1984 from a car accident, but at that time, I didn't know I needed to see a chiropractor, so I never checked it out. Now after all these years I find out my neck is screwed up and usually the adjustment I would get at the chiropractors office always put my neck back where it belonged, but this just does not go away. That is why I say it came on slowly.

See i had no idea a chiropractor was bad news for what I am experiencing or I definitely would not have gone to him. Thanks for the explanation.
