Hello all! I just joined this forum a few minutes ago and I'm already liking it. To start off, I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease in May of 2010. I have played basketball since 1st grade, but last season was very challenging. We have 6:30 a.m. practices, and then after school from 3:45 til 6. I was always tired and my legs hurt all the time, sitting, standing, running, anything. I built up the muscles around my knees because I have tendinitis, which helped somewhat. To get to the main point, I have always had severe joint pain, and I can't play basketball this year. While I am very upset still (I made the decision halfway through last season), I realize I will not play in college anyway. Now, I don't know how to exercise and lose weight while keeping the Crohn's in check. Swimming isn't my thing at all, plus I don't have access to a pool. Running hurts my legs. Plus, I have never had to watch what I eat, and I am suffering through depression because I'm so used to exercising. I currently am on Cimzia and Methotrexate, but neither have helped the joint pain. It would be great if anyone could give me advice or tips! Thank you in advance :)

If I can suggest any one thing it's pilates. Reformer pilates if you can find it. It's designed for people like us! It keeps your body active while strengthening your joints in ways that is easy on them too. No hard impact excersies.

My left leg atrophied earlier this year. In two months I've gone from a wheelchair to walking again (not perfectly but hell it'll take some time). I've been doing pilates 3 times a week. When I saw my Rheumatologist he said it was the best thing I could have done for my joints.

NHL teams are now getting their players to do pilates to keep the joints healthy and prevent injury. Obviously it's been working for me :)

I have heard basic weightlifting helps. I'm definitely going to try that. For some reason biking hurts my knees, but I could definitely try a stationary bike and see! Thanks Ethan!!

Pilates sounds like a great idea. I don't know much about it, but I'm willing to try anything! Especially if it works for you! Do I get a DVD or a class or is there something online? Thank you schmo! :)

Hello guys today the topic is very nice and we discuss about the exercise and the dieting/ You know guys that if you are fat /over weight then you do exercise but its nesseary that you continue the exercise daily routine and dieting is also continue along with exercise/

kettle bells, check them out.

whatever you do, it appears that short high intensity workouts are better for weight loss than long boring slogs, both for muscle building (weight gain) and fat burning (weight loss)

Hey Elizabethh,

Although it will definitely cost more money, if you can afford it I would do a class instead of just getting a dvd. For one thing is that it's hard to know if you're doing the exercises correctly on your own, and it's much better to have a professional watching you. Not all pilates teachers are created equal as well, so try and find one that's reputable!

Maybe boxing if thats your kind of thing? I generally do a mixture of cardio and weights to stay in shape, and have been looking into boxing as an extra or sometimes alternative to my cardio. If the classes are too expensive, maybe have a punchbag at home if its feasible? :)
