Hi, i was diagnosed with crohns august 2011 and went on prednisolone straight away and came off it dec 2011. as soon as i came off it the symptoms came back. i thought they were withdrawal symptoms so didnt seek help straight away and it was the xmas break. i was bed ridden for about 2 weeks where i didnt eat at all. i went to see a dietician and started on the liquid diet but a week of that and i wasnt feeling that great. i saw the consultant and she put me on 20mg prednisolone a day which ive been on a week and azathioprine which ive been on 2days.
the problem is i still have no energy.since i stopped eating boxing day it hasnt come back. im basically bed ridden but do sit in the lounge a bit most days. if i shower i sleep for hours afterwards. its been over 3 weeks now with no energy and last time i was on pred it helped quickly and i was up at 4am cleaning cupboards (it was40mg a day then). i feel the symptoms of crohns are lessening - blood, D etc but the energy levels arent changing. the consultant said next week ill have my first weekly test for azathioprine and they will test my iron levels as i might need an infusion.
i spoke to her today as im still off work and worrying a bit and she has put me on 30mg pred a day for 2 weeks starting tomorrow. if im not better by monday ill have to go in to hospital and have IV steroids for 5 days. obviously i dont want to go into hospital.

has anyone had this sort of fatigue - where i literally could sleep 16 hours a day (before this i was very active and never slept in passed 7am) and im struggling to put one foot in front of the other? is it because i got weak before i started the drugs?

it wasnt this bad when i was diagnosed last year so i dont understand why my energy levels are so low and im bored of being in bed now and i need to walk my dogs and get back to work!

I can relate. I normally go on 4 - 5 hours of sleep per day, and I'm very high energy. Crohn's really did me in, with the combination of the physical toll it was taking from the diarrhea, plus the emotional toll, plus -- when I was diagnosed my GI doc checked my B12 and found it was very low, plus I was anemic. That's all fixed now, and generally I'm close to my prior energy levels. Still working on getting my CD under control, but I believe my fatigue was due to low B12 and its accompanying anemia. The B12 issue is huge -- you can do a search on the posts in this forum and find it's a very common problem for CD and it really affects your physical well-being.
