Two weeks ago my Dr put me on prednisolone tablets, a four week tapering down dose, and also on Ferro-F tablets 310 mg (equivalent to elemental iron 100 mg) and folic acid 350 µg. The prednisolone is okay I'm not doing too badly on it and it seems to be helping.

But the iron tablets are giving me hell with constipation. I cut back from taking one a day, now only taking one only every three days (which is probably not enough), but I am still getting really bad frequent constipation. I've been looking around for a lower dose iron tablet with folic acid, I think I found some online today, FeFol. According to the product sheet these contain:

"COMPOSITION:
Each spansule sustained-release capsule contains 150 mg dried ferrous sulphate (45 mg elemental iron -Fe++) and 0,5 mg folic acid."

Has anybody else tried these? I'm hoping that I might be able to tolerate taking one of these a day, given that the ingredients are about half of what my current tablets are. The product sheet claims that they are formulated to help alleviate or prevent side-effects, including constipation. Has anybody had any experience?

This or anything else you can suggest would be most helpful.

I took ferrous sulphate tablets, and didn't have any side effects from them. But other people do- it seems to be a personal thing. But when I started taking them my doc did say to let him know if i had any unpleasant side effects, as he could give me some different pills to try. So I would contact your doctor, explain the problem, and see if he can recommend something to try.

I take 650mg of iron everyday. Never had an issue with it. You could ask your local pharmacist if there's a lower dose of iron you could take and increase your fluid intake while on anything that may constipate you. I'd take the folic acid separately so you can get the amount you need.
