I just started taking Ferro-f-tabs a couple of days ago, on the packet says Ferrous Fumarate 310 mg per tablet. Already I'm having trouble with constipation, and I'm wondering if there are lower dose tablets that I can take until I get used to it. Either that, or some way to head off/alleviate the severity of the constipation.

I assume that I can't just cut the tablets in half, because they are coated slow-release type.

Any ideas or suggestions would be very welcome.

Yeah don't cut the tab in half, as like you said it will interfere with the absorption.

There are lower doses of ferrous fumarate, one that springs to mind is fersamal tablets (210mg) and the syrup is 140mg per 5ml.

Also taking the tablets/syrup with Vitamin C rich foods/or tablets help the absorption of iron.

Thanks Soybean for the information about the lower doses of ferrous fumarate. They may help me to get the dosage down to something that I can handle.

When you say that taking the tablets with vitamin C helps with the absorption of iron, does this also help in alleviating the constipation?

Hey Gra :)

As far as I can see Vitamin C helps with the absorption of the iron leaving less in the stomach to cause constipation. Another good thing to do is make sure you drink lots of water whilst on the iron tablets (and in general) to help reduce the constipation. I hope that with the reduced dose, vit c and increased water intake, the constipation is soon a distant memory.

That's a nice thought - banish constipation (there ought'a be a law against it) :)

Thanks Soybean,
