Hi all,
Two weeks ago, I was placed on 50mg Azathioprine for the treatment of moderate/highly active Ulcerative Colitis. As someone who tends to be sensitive to strong medications (especially those affecting the stomach), I was pleasantly surprised that the first 6 days on Aza were side-effect free. However, on the 7th day, 3 hours after taking my dose in the afternoon, I experienced bad stomach cramps, vomiting, shakes and a subsequent high fever (38-39c), effects which vanished by the next morning.
After two days of these symptoms, I was prescribed anti-nausea tablets which eliminated the cramps, nausea and vomiting. Despite this, I still have painful muscle stiffness and tenderness in both arms and legs. Furthermore, while my temperature is normal throughout the day, it spikes during the night/early morning (2-4 am), last night reaching 39.6. Strangely, I experience no chills or shakes in this instance. Fever abates with a dose of paracetamol, but returns regardless the following night. In the morning, I'm left feeling 'flu-ey'.
My doctor is at a loss to explain this, as my bloods (including white cell and crp) are fine. He has suggested stopping the Aza until Monday, when he will have the results of a urine test, before potentially starting on a broad spectrum antibiotic. I'm just worried that if my fever stops, I'll have to stop Aza (I really don't want surgery), but if not, I'm going to be laid up with a succession of mystery conditions for the duration of my treatment.
Has anyone else here experienced something similar? I questioned whether I might be allergic to Aza, but my doctor dismissed the idea.
