Hello,

I was diagnosed with uc after a few weeks of bleeding followed by a colonoscopy and a biopsy a few months back. I have had two flares since then and have been able to regain control with mesalamine enemas. (Just wanted to give some background info) With that said my doctor always has me use two weeks of enemas and then see where I am at. Last night I finished my 14 days and low and behold tonight I had some irregular bowel movements and I fear that the two weeks may have been in vain. Is it safe for me to go ahead and continue with the mesalamine enema for an additional week, just until my endpoint is on a more normal day? This would make a total of three weeks. My fear is that by the time I get word back from the doctor to go ahead (or not) I will already be bleeding again. I can kind of tell when it it going to happen already.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer in advance!

Hi Dust, and welcome to the forum. :)

I'm sorry you're not doing as well as you had hoped. Perhaps it's time to come up with a new plan with your doctor. Maybe a new medicine would do the trick.

Hang in there and keep us posted on your progress.

Hi Dust,

I've been on those daily for months (on and off since 1996), along with lialda. So far, no apparent side effects. The enemas are expensive as they contain a lot of drug, so there is pressure to minimize usage.

Don't be too shy to call your doc.
