I thought that I had finally recovered from a very painful fissure after 30 days on Flagyl antibiotic. I was happy to finish the dose because it tore my stomach up giving me diarrhea.

I was so happy that I was feeling better just two weeks ago that I actually did a cartwheel.

So now, just this week, I have another tear with diarrhea and leaky anus to go with it. I"m not sure which came first. OUCH it itches and burns!!

WTF!?

The only activity I can think of is sex with my husband -after four months of abstinence since the birth of our kid. Am I really so delicate that I tear like paper after having sex? (I'm talking regular "front door" sex here-nothing weird)

I can't see my new doc until Dec. 10th so I'm left alone to treat this. Do I need more of that Flagyl? (Ew, I hope not. I would think that the infection would be gone after 30 days on that stuff). Should I take limotil for the diarrhea? (I would hate to get constipated and make the tear worse).

I would love to hear some opinions on the matter. What is the deal with Fissures and people with Crohn's? Is the skin more sensitive or is it a result of having irritable bowls such as diarrhea or constipation?

I just hope this tear does not get worse like the last one that required surgery and a VERY long recovery. :grumpy:

Hiya Mia

Is your baby now 4 months old?
That bit between your bum and vagina has been traumatised during childbirth unless you had a C section? think it's the perineum, and perineal tears are quite common especially after sex. I had an episiotomy with my first child and this area always throbs after sex, and is paper thin like you said.
Is this where it is?
Fissures, little tears are common with prolonged bouts of diarrhea too, I use Germoloids, and sitz baths help too.
Hope you haven't got another infection. Antibiotics crease my guts up!

Astra,

Yes, my baby is 4 months old now. :) And I did have vaginal birth. Ugh. Please tell me it gets better. I thought the "trauma" would have gotten better by now. Oh why can't I heal as fast as my baby? He scratches his little face with his little nails and it is gone in 5 minutes.

My tear is near my bum hole -not really near the vag opening. But I guess any amount of pressure in that area really affects it. How did I turn into such a delicate old lady?????

ugh, fissures are the worst! Sorry you're dealing with this.

I can just offer some advice from my experience. I didn't tolerate Flagyl, so I switched to Cipro, which worked just as well without the side effects, so maybe that might be something to look into. I've also been put on Rectogesic ointment for my fissures, which is nitroglycerin so it relaxes the muscles and dilates the blood vessels, and makes it easier for them to heal. But I don't know if that's something that's used often - my fissures were so bad they injected botox into them, lol.

I would stay away from anti-diarrhea meds if I were you, because OMG I can't even imagine being constipated with a fissure!!!!

Hope you feel better soon!

Hello again,

I actually have 2 anal fissures right now, really sucks. Sitz baths actually really do wonders for the pain, if you can get 2 in a day, I think it will really help you.
When mine was really bad I use Nitroglycern ointment, you will need a prescription from your doctor for this though, I am currently on Flagyl for my abscess and I think it is helping that as well.
If would only recommend surgery as a very last resort for fissures, your anal and rectal muscles are already so damaged from this disease the less cutting and trauma down there the better.
Also if you can tolerate it, I couldn't very well, try to get at least 75% of your daily fiber intake in everyday to try to bulk up your stools but still keep them soft enough to pass easily, my doctor told me my stools should be like toothpaste a little gross but a good analogy. If you can somehow reduce your trips to the bathroom it helps a lot with the healing. I know this is the hardest part, I am on a pretty strict diet right now and it seems to be helping, the fiber is hard for me because it upsets my tummy, but I too have diarrhea throughout the day.

But again I will say sitz baths really did help me, I didn't think they would and I thought my doctor was crazy for pushing them so hard on me, but they really did help, just be diligent about getting them in. You can just take 5-10 minutes before you shower and then before bed. they even sell portable stiz baths that you don't even have to fill up the tub.

Hope I can offer some helpful advice, good luck, I know what you are going through and it sucks.

Oh and I forgot, I sometimes use A&D ointment, since it protects the skin, it helps with the burning from the leakage.
