Flare up on Prednisone and Asacol

Hello everyone,
I think my daughter is having a flare up and she is on Prednisone and Asacol.
Isn't the Prednisone suppose to control the flare ups? She has been getting stomach pains and joint pains for the past 5 days, I will be calling the dr on monday to see if he can fit us in. Scared and upset for her

Everyone is different .
DS flared while on every drug except remicade
Granted he had improvement from the days of no drugs but not remission.
It took two rounds (5 months of pred)
Plus remicade to get him with out joint pain.
Also bearin mind if she is weaning pred than symptoms can come back worse than before dx also pred can cause joint pain all on its own
Clear as mud
Which is why talking things over with your Gi is a good idea
 
One last thing
5-ASA are typically not enough alone to keep crohn's symptoms at bay
So if you are in the process of lowering her pred then You may have your answer about the asacol.
 
Idk how long the Asacol has been being used, but there is the rare side effect from Asacol of colitis-like symptoms, aka rectal bleeding. Some kids are 5asa intolerant, mine was one of them. Sorry I think I posted this before for you. If I did I don't mean to be a broke record.

The Predisone is a big guns so it should not be used for any length of time. The Pred is a quick fix, as someone once said before the fix a flat when the other drugs fail. The side effects are huge especially to a growing child.

If this is the case and the Asacol is not working the doctors are probably going to suggest Remicade as the next treatment option.
 
We are not weaning off the Prednisone yet and she started to take the Asacol 2 weeks ago. I will be calling the dr on Monday , we have an appt for the 30th but we need to be seen sooner. Thank you for your input it helps when one is going through this.
 
Fwiw DS went from a 5-ASA to 6-mp then to methotrexate then to remicade
It depends on the doc and the kid
Our Gi was hesitant to switch up meds based on stomach and joint pain alone.
 
If you see blood take her in. Rowan bleed terribly from the Asacol not trying to freak you out but needed a blood transfusion twice from the side effect. It just got worse and worse. Joint pain was alway ALWAYS an issue until her surgery. Might not be from the medication but just the disease.

Your daughter bleed that much that she needed a blood tranfusion from the Asacol!?
 
Sorry to say it but yes, this was their only conclusion. IT IS A RARE SIDE EFFECT, so rare they ignored it and didn't tell me the first time it happened and called it the stomach flu, put her on it again and 28 days later had another blood transfusion. At that time switched her from Asacol to Sulfasalazine and it was horrible she got all the side effects this is when the deemed her 5asa intolerant. Not considered an allergic reaction. It is rare I only know of myself and one other mom of a UCer on FB this happened to. Once i transferred her the new hospital called it a medicinally induced pancolitis, the meds made her worse. Not many cases of this.
 
Along with everyone else I just say CALL. I hope, like the Queen, this is a minor blip on the radar screen.

What dose of Prednisone is your daughter on and how long has she been on it?

Is this the first time she has been on it?

Thank you all for your posts and concern! She is on 2 ml twice a day (Prednisone) and I called her dr I cant get in for another 3 weeks. But if it continues I will just walk right on in and have her be seen.
 
Sorry to hear she has been having symptoms! No experience with Asacol. Hope she feels better soon and it is just a bug of some sort!
 
Before you walk in...that doesn't really work ... Trust me
Leave a message stating you need to talk to the doc not the nurse and you want her to be seen soon since you are concerned about xyz....
So even if the doc doesn't physically see her . The doc should at least give a phone consult.
 
Maddies dr made the appt for th 30th of Jan and I said to him dont you think that is too long of a wait and he said no. Then he said if you have any problems just come right on in and I will see her. So if she continues to have problems I am going to do just that.
 
Maddie had stomach pains and threw up at school today, I called the dr office let them know and they got me in for this week.
 
Glad that you're getting in soon!
I know Mary's situation was scary, but dd had terribly bloody stools for months when she was having symptoms...because they were consistent and she wasn't bleeding profusely we did nothing but treat the resulting anemia. So be seen if stools are bloody but don't panic...blood can also be a small issue. :)
