I've been having flat stools off and on not long after my first colonoscopy. My gut is also distended and having some pain on my left side. My colonoscopy didn't show anything so I'm assuming this is from swelling in the colon. Does anyone know if this is a correct assumption?

Flat stools can be caused by polyps or obstructions, but if this is the case, they remain flat all of the time. My GI said that if the flat stools come and go, it is usually caused by muscle spasms in the colon and is a very typical symptom of IBS. If you have a lot of pain I would talk to your doc and see if an anti-spasmotic might help?

Hi Tom,

Based upon the distention and flat stools, I'd give your GI a call and talk it over. If the pain gets really bad, head to the ER. But it's hopefully spasms like cookie said.
