Flucloxacillin?

I've just been prescribed flucloxacillin because I have a couple of boils or infected insect bites on the back of my leg. I forgot to ask the doctor about drug interactions. Does anyone know if this is okay to take when I'm on methotrexate and humira? And also I've been reading online that the side effects of flucloxacillin can include inflammation of the bowel, which is obviously something we would want to avoid. Just curious if anyone has any firsthand experience of this anti-biotic, did it aggravate your Crohn's?

It seems to be some sort of penicillin. I know that penicillin and methotrexate do not mix well together as taking the penicillin may contribute in increasing the levels of MTX in your blood because of the renal capture linked to the antibiotics. Since I don't know if all penicillin have an interaction with methotrexate I would suggest you double check that with your pharmacist as few of my doctors seemed totally not aware of that incompatibility themselves but my pharmacist seemed pretty worried of letting me take that with it. Often, their issue is to confirm it is ok with your actual level of MTX as most interaction refers to MTX level for cancer and such which are really higher than our dosage. It still needs to be taken into account and I was told I needed rigourous blood test done to make sure if my levels were ok so I suggest you your pharmacist and see if blood tests are needed in your situation.

For what it is of this specific antibiotic and the crohn... well I don't really know per say as it's not the same. For me penicillin was ok and helped my situation but I know they are generally known to be a bit of a pain on the digestive track...

I hope this helps you a bit
Good luck

I had a course of Flucloxacillin recently, although I was on remicade at the time so can't comment on the drug interaction.
However, I did find that it aggravated my Crohn's, although I believe that is quite common with all antibiotics.
It cleared up my rather unsightly (bottom) rash :shifty-t:, but did take a week or so for my stomach to settle down.

Okay thanks. I rang up my doctor's surgery and am awaiting to hear back from the doctor that prescribed it. Hopefully she can prescribe a topical anti-biotic as an alternative to oral.
