Any tricks on keeping the Folic Acid (& Iron too) at good levels? This is a struggle in my house, especially with a teen during puberty.

Hi SupportiveMom, welcome to the forum :)

My daughter, who does NOT have crohns, uses Proferrin supplement for iron - but, I believe iron supplements can sometimes cause difficulties in those with crohns. Kimmidwife has previously recommended Floradix (Kim, correct me if this is the wrong supplement!).

Cooking in cast iron pans can also help increase iron in diet (although not sure by how much). Blackstrap molasses has quite a surprisingly high amount of iron in it. When my own iron was quite low, I added it to oatmeal and even a spoon or so to a cup of hot water (it actually was much better than I expected - I'd expected a horrible tasting drink!) - but, I believe it must be 'blackstrap' not regular molasses.

:)

Yes Floradix is an awesome iron supplement. It is very gentle. Does not hurt the stomach. I always recommend calling the company to discuss dosing. They will tell you what dose to use according to the severity of the anemia.

The best ways to get folate and Iron are through a healthy diet. Folic acid and Iron Supplements both carry potential health risks, so unless there's a reason to supplement (I.e. anemia due to intestinal bleeding), it's better not to. I'm also assuming that blood tests show low levels of these nutrients.
