hey all,
i just started on entocort for the first time ever a couple of weeks ago, and i am SO thankful that it has actually started working for me! so, i haven't been having as much pain or D in general lately. but, i am still in the process of trying to figure out what foods i do okay with and which give me pain and D even now that i am on the upswing. i am vegetarian and don't eat dairy, so i guess i am mostly asking for advice on fruits and veggies. i had a salad yesterday, and, pardon the image, it looked pretty much the same on the way out as on the way in (and caused a good deal of pain too). so, i guess salads are a no-no, which i probably could have predicted (but it was so good!). any other thoughts on various fruits or veggies, or helpful ways to prepare them so they don't cause as much trouble? thanks so much in advance!

Hi Karly. With Crohn's you have to be very careful with fruits and veggies.

First for veggies, you shouldn't eat any raw veggie except maybe a little lettuce. You should peel and cook all veggies till they are very soft. Also try to avoid vegetables with tough skins, seeds, and those that cause gas (use trial and error and see what suits you). My favourite way to eat veggies is a pouree cream of vegetable soup.

For fruits, you should peel them , eat them as ripe as possible, and avoid ones you cannot peel (like grapes and cherries, ...) or have seeds or dried fruits.

For good coverage on this, I advise 2 books:

- What to Eat with IBD
- The New Eating Right for a bad gut

A final note: I respect your choice of being a vegetarian, but with a disease like Crohn's it's very important that you get anough protein, zinc, calcium and B12 in your diet. And vegetarian sources for this like legumes (beans, lentils etc..) are not very easy to digest and may cause you discomfort. So maybe try to introduce fish and fish oil in your diet. Also take calcium supplements if you don't eat dairy

I second Mazen's post whole heartedly. Raw fruit is a no-no though I can manage mangoes for some reason (ripe, gooshy, peeled would be the reason). Same with veges. That kind of leaves the protein and bread groups because they break down better. Beans are rough. Vitamin sources are important. Unfortunately, Karly, we have to eat the way our bodies allow. It bugs me I can eat cheesecake but not an apple or that I can't have a good salad, but he consequences are too dire.

Welcome to the board!

You may want to load up on bananas as they are a constipator and if you have D it could help with that. Personally I can eat what ever I feel like and am fine for the most part. Fast food kills me and I get D almost immmediately. Good luck

ya, fast food is an extreme killer, except for in in out... if i go to mcdonalds or any other nasty place like that guaranteed in the bathroom for a long time... i dunno why but i can eat all fruits and veggies.. i just can't handle nuts or popcorn and some other junk
