Hello I think I am in a flare currently I saw some blood and have really bad pain and super tired! I am sick of living this way I want to live a normal life or close to it.
So I was wondering if I got my large intestine removed would I feel better?! I am okay with having a ostomy. I take humira every two weeks and I still got in a flare about a month ago and might have one now! I just want the tummy pain and everything to go away

Hi Emilymarie. I'm so sorry to hear that you are having such a hard time :-( Does the 19 in your username refer to your age? I don't have a stoma myself but there is a lot of information and advice and people you could maybe discuss it with http://www.crohnsforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=46.
Have you discussed surgery with your doctors and/or family?

Hi, I think this really depends on where your disease is located. Ulcerative Colitis I think is limited to the large intestine, so removing it all gets rid of the disease, but Crohn's can effect any part of the digestive tract, and even if it's limited to your large intestine at the moment, it could flare up again somewhere else even if the large intestine is removed.

I also think I'd be ok with an ostomy, which my surgeon thinks I will end up with eventually. Many people do find their quality of life improves, and many live a full life with an ostomy. However, if you have an ostomy after the removal of the whole large intestine (rather than just part of it) I believe that means you'll have an illeostomy rather than a colostomy, and illesostomies are often harder to manage.

A stoma is usually the last resort, as is any major surgery. Have you tried other medications? Have you seen a pain management specialist to see if you can reduce your pain through medication? Have you had the cause of your tiredness investigated? Sometimes things like vitamin deficiencies or just lack of calories can cause you to feel exhausted, so it may be that some of your symptoms can be improved or corrected through diet, supplements, etc.

(I can't guarantee I got all my facts right in this post, so be sure to check everything with your doctors or some other reliable source, as I could well have made some mistakes!)
