As I have mentioned before, I have problems with my esophagus when I eat. Its not all the time, but when it happens, it brings tears to my eyes because it is so uncomfortable. I am not choking because I can breath, but it feels like there is food stuck passed my windpipe. My GI wants to do an upper endoscopy to see if he can see anything or shed some light on what might be happening. I talked to someone tonight, they said that they had the same choking feeling and it was a polyp. They also have Crohn's in their stomach. I don't know much about polyps, but I know they can lead to cancer if they aren't dealt with. Another thing that it might be is barretts esophagus disease. My grandma has it and my GI said that it does have a small genetic factor in it, so it might be the cause of my problems. My grandma has a poor quality of life because her case is so severe. I am a little bit panicked about what the GI might find

Hope all goes well. Have you gone through basic PPI's to treat GERD, LPR or an ulcer? I'm sure you have done that first.

Hi, I hope the scope goes fine and that it turns out to be nothing serious.
Are you going to do the scope in a hospital or a clinic ?
Polyps sometimes can be remived during the scope itself, but some doctors will do it only if done within an hospital just in case ...
Maybe it is worth to catch a word with the GI who is going to scope you.

Good luck !

Good luck, you are wise to have the endoscopy and hopefully it will give you peace of mind or at least you can get treatment so that eating is easier.

I forgot the 3rd thing he said it could be. He said because I have a severe hernia, it could of caused a hiatal hernia. That would explain spitting up food hours after I have eaten it, but I'm not sure it would cause food to get stuck. I don't know much about it though.
NGNG I am taking omeraprazole, I have taken it on and off but it has never seemed to help. He started me on it again to see if it helps until I get my scope. No improvement yet, I choked on my dinner last night

Good luck with the scope afidz. I know the possibilites are scary but it is better that it's found. I have also heard similar descriptions with nutcraker esophagus and achalasia but I don't know if they would ring true with for you.

I just posted another variation of this thread. I remembered posting this one but i couldn't find it so i posted again. After I submitted it i found this one lol. I deleted the second.
The scope is on Friday. I started taking omerprazole again because my GI thinks it's related to acid reflux. It hasn't made a difference, I'm still choking. Had a pretty bad episode this morning that left me throwing up in my rheumatologist office. Does anyone deal with this or know someone that has?

My husband actually had the same thing happen to him. Two times in two years we had to take him to the ER because he would get food stuck in his esophagus. And they needed to remove the food. Same deal. He could breathe and everything but the food would get lodged and then he'd feel pressure as his body tried to throw it up and his esophagus tried to move it down. Very scary to see him during that whole scare.

BUT they found that his esophagus had been narrowing from Indigestion causing inflammation and making his esophagus smaller therefore causing the food to stick. They believe It's from his acid reflux I think. Anyways. They did a painless procedure and dropped a weight down his esophagus and stretched it out. That was last year. He's been feeling great! They said there's chances he'd have to have it stretched again but they prescribed him medicine to help. We don't have insurance so he stopped taking the expensive medicine and we've noticed he's been struggling eating again.

I just want to let you know that I've seen how scary it can be, but I want to let you know there's things they can do to help you!

Endoscopy went well. My GI thinks that the hernia is causing me to choke. He said he wouldn't necessarily call it a hiatal hernia thigh but it involves the sane passageway. Other than that he says my upper GI looks great, he did remove a small polyp. So happy it's nothing too serious.

Not sure whether to put a hug or thanks on this one. Very thankful to hear that all went well and that your upper GI looks great!!! Sad to hear what's causing you to choke and giving you troubles. I hope they'll be able to figure out how to make you more comfortable soon. Sending you lots of hugs!!!!
