Just wondering the best way to tackle hair removal - legs, underarms & bikini line - given our lowered immunity & susceptibility to infections.
Sterilized razor DIY? Home or salon waxing?? Laser hair removal???
Any advice & experiences, good & bad welcomed.
Many thanks.

I did lasar hair removal for my bikini and underarms and it was not a problem. I also wax my legs :) hope that helps! both did not irritate me or cause any form of infection

Thanks for your responses. I think my skin is not necessarily sensitive but it certainly seems more fragile which I guess is due to the meds. Prior to my diagnosis, I either had salon waxing, 'sugar waxing' at home or the razor for legs & pits. I guess my main concern is the hygiene aspect of salon treatments & as I'm getting older & less flexible I find doing the backs of my legs in particular to be rather awkward!

When I was on Aza and very immune suppressed, after shaving my skin broke out really badly with cysts. Now I don't shave at all. I wax my legs and underarms and bikini line myself (I'm too embarrased to go to a salon about it because I hate them asking questions about my surgery scars).

What about an epilator? It's like an electric razor that plucks instead of cuts. You just roll it up and down the leg/arm/whatever, and it rips them right out. Slower than waxing, but same results. I bought mine at Bed Bath & Beyond, using the 20% off coupons they so nicely send me. It was about $60, same as a good electric razor. I have the Braun Silk-Epil.

Hmm...
Do those really work? If so, it'd be cheaper than going to one of those places to get waxed and it'd be nice not getting cut up all the time. Might need to do a little research on those...
Thanks:)

It's popular amongst professional belly dancers, as it doesn't leave stubble or shadow, and doesn't have to be done as often.

I've had an epilator for years - it's called Emjoi. It works really well. Occasionally pulls a hair, but nothing to worry about. :)

Did a little research on these epilators. Would like to take a look at one in a physical store here but, so far nobody seems to carry them in their stores. Haven't tried bed bath & beyond yet though. Might think about getting one from a website where I order my period pads for night time. They usually have coupons too. Here's their website if anyone's interested.

Wouldn't mind trying one that's wet/dry. Are any of yours that way?

Mine isn't, but it's quite old and I am not sure whether they even had wet/dry versions when I bought it.

There is no need for wet/dry with an epilator, to the best of my knowledge. You don't need to do any kind of prep. I did mine in zones, so I did a bit several times a week to keep it all up. Pits one day, lower legs one day, thighs one day, etc.

Mine came with 2 heads, one for getting started where it didn't take as much hair at one time, and one for when you got used to it that got them all.

Thanks for your help & input! The one I've been looking at is this one. Figure since it'd be a first time doesn't hurt getting something a little less expensive. Can always upgrade...

I mostly control hair growth through medications. This is because I have a hormone disorder, which means that if I leave things as they are naturally, I would have excess hair growth (along with various other symptoms). My doctors have me on a treatment regime that includes anti-androgens and a particular version of the contraceptive pill. Taking the medication, I have hardly any body hair at all, and what there is is really easy to remove just with a gentle razor. I have really sensitive and dry skin, and not having to remove hair definitely helps avoid further skin problems.

The pill does have side effects, so you wouldn't use it just to control hair growth if you don't have problems with hormones. But I suppose if you're really susceptible to infections and skin problems from hair removal, it might work out as less of a risk. If you're taking the pill anyway, you might find that particular versions of it lessen hair growth.

Bought that one I posted about & it arrived today. Tried it on one leg and it didn't do too bad for a first try. Did miss a few spots but, might also be operative error not the epilator's fault. We'll see later...

I've noticed that since I've been on Humira & Imuran my problem with ingrown hairs is absurd. Which of course I then remove generally and they become infected unless I take super good care of them. It's so annoying but with my sensitive skin I'm terrified to wax!

I've also noticed that on the Humira ingrown hairs are terrible and cause painful boils.

Also, I was on prednisone for over 6 months; from it I actually got steroid syndrome which put a complete halt to my hair growth for months. Now I have no hair under my arms (yay, haven't shaved those in 6 months!) and patchy leg hair. Its odd, it just never came back

i'd love that to happen to me. im a real yeti all over. people say aren't you lucky you tan so easily but what they don't know is dark skin equals dark hair. although I live in a country that has hardly any sun so I don't get to tan much.
im a waxer and im on remicade. I have no problems. my skin is far worse when I shave. I get spots and ingrown hairs.

I use Nair to remove the hair on my legs. that way there is no risk of getting cut with a razor.

don't you find it expensive. I used it a few times and found it similar to shaving only closer. the hair grows back within a few days. how often do you need to do it.

I did my bikini line with a home waxing kit...
That one was possibly a bit risky but I actually did ok!
Didn't get rid of everything but thinned it out. If I do it again I will do it maybe a couple of weeks before then do it for the second time.
I go and get my legs waxed at a salon before I go on holiday but I usually shave them.
