I mostly control hair growth through medications. This is because I have a hormone disorder, which means that if I leave things as they are naturally, I would have excess hair growth (along with various other symptoms). My doctors have me on a treatment regime that includes anti-androgens and a particular version of the contraceptive pill. Taking the medication, I have hardly any body hair at all, and what there is is really easy to remove just with a gentle razor. I have really sensitive and dry skin, and not having to remove hair definitely helps avoid further skin problems.
The pill does have side effects, so you wouldn't use it just to control hair growth if you don't have problems with hormones. But I suppose if you're really susceptible to infections and skin problems from hair removal, it might work out as less of a risk. If you're taking the pill anyway, you might find that particular versions of it lessen hair growth.
