Hi,

I have had Crohns for 5 years now since the age of 16, and I have always had thick hair, up until a few months ago where I started to have significant thinning of my hair. I went through a pretty stressful time in my life followed by a mild to moderate flare of my Crohns disease, both of which I am guessing contributed to the hair loss. I have just been using Nioxin hair care products to try and improve the thickness of my hair. Has anyone else had this problem and what other treatments have you found successful?

Thank you! :)
Holly

Hi Ron. I'm currently on 25mg 6MP 4/7 and 5/7, 100mg Allopurinol bd and 300mg Infliximab 6/52. At the time of the initial hair loss I had come off Mirtazapine and was then on Venlafaxine.

I use a shampoo with biotin in it and also take biotin daily,2000mg tablet.
It does take a few months to grow back appreciably but it works for me
Very upsetting losing ones hair...it got to the point I was thinking of a wig...there are good ones out there
In the end I did not need it.
Feel better soon

Have you had your B-12 checked? I was losing a lot of hair and it was because my B-12 was really low.

Hi Holly.
I've always had thick hair too, but since starting infliximab on 1st November last year it's been getting gradually thinner and thinner. Not only that, but it seems to have stopped growing too, I've just cancelled my second hair cut appointment.
I've been assured that I won't lose all my hair but that the thinning is a side effect for some people on inflximab and other drugs, and there's very little which can be done to prevent it.
I've always kept my hair short and am considering taking it even shorter as I believe short layers do more to disguise hair loss.
Sorry I can't be of more help, I know it can be very difficult for some ladies :(
Best wishes,
Bounty x

Thanks everyone! I have bought some Biotin supplements. My B12 is fine at the moment. I've been having Infliximab for years and never had a problem with hair loss in the past. I did experience stress and severe anxiety during my last semester of uni which I'm thinking may have contributed
