Hello everyone,

I saw my GI doctor recently and he prescribed me Bentyl, thinking that if I have IBS it'll ease up the pain while I'm waiting for my colonoscopy which is this upcoming friday.

I have only been taking it for a few days now, and I haven't noticed any changes, but...I haven't had a bowel movement once, and don't feel the need to pass anything at all. Last night I also noticed my right eye had turned a bit red, though I'm not sure if the medication can cause that.

I've been eating normally, but no stools have passed. I completely lost the need to go, and it's worrying me.

Has anyone experienced this with Bentyl before?

Hi,

I take Bentyl (aka Dicyclomine) when my small bowel spasms. It does take 1/2 hr. or so for it to work.

I have Crohn's and if I eat something, am stressed, or flaring, I notice that my gut will spasm. When my pain level is 4-6, then I'll take one and lie down.

I haven't had any of the issues you've described. Contact your pharmacist and ask him if these are a side effect of the drug or ask your GI about it.

good luck to you. ~GW

I take a Bentyl pill after a colonscopy and it works great for me then. I try not to take Bentyl pills too often otherwise because they are very constipating for me.

I was given Bentyl and Hyoscyamine (a similar medication), but didn't notice any changes with either.

I agree that you should call your pharmacist to see if these are possible side effects.

Are you taking the Bentyl daily, or as needed? I was instructed to take it in whatever way seemed to best help. Maybe if you took it only as needed rather than on a set schedule, it wouldn't interfere with your bowel movements. It might be worth asking your pharmacist if that would help, as well.
